  1. I've written up a blog post on my first steps towards building an automatic deckbuilding machine for collectable card games.

It's been a fun project so far! Looking forward to starting on the mechanical stuff soon.

  2. Most of my life I wanted good fantasy on TV. But as I grew older I started accepting that while I had the desire, my expectations would ever be met. In my brain fantasy and live action hardly ever click nicely. Even the greatest achievements like the Lord of the Rings adaptation is a bit off to me. Fantasy belongs in drawing, paintings, stories … not actors and special effects.

Another thing I never wanted was a retelling of an adventure or a campaign. That would just mess up the original, put expectations that would influence the future players, defeating the purpose of the source.

That leaves me with interesting settings that could be done well on today’s TV.

The Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City

Luka Rejec made a setting that is … I really can’t do it justice. But the first time I saw the illustrations I was transported to my childhood Summers. I could smell the attic of our family house, filled with comic books that were stashed there. I could feel the paper under my fingers flipping through titles that today we call classics. It transported me to the world of Jeremiah, Den, Axa, and so many more comics I read as a kid.

    Ars Magica

Skirting my opinion on fantasy on TV is the most famous game of medieval mages. I’d set the covenant in the Balkans so we get a nice mix of cultures, and do it like a magically enhanced Cadfael series.

    Shadow of the Beanstalk

My dearest modern cyberpunk, or cyber-noire if you prefer, setting for games and fiction. This setting is dripping for a good treatment of any kind. The card game was so awesome that once the licence expired a non-profit was organised to keep the game alive. The original board game was OK, and I’d love to try it with the Director’s Cut fan made rules. The RPG was tacked to the FFG house system, and was still OK.

But the setting is so rich, so well crafted, already full of beautiful visuals … it is a true shame it is not getting more love.

  3. Recently a maintainer from jinteki.net contacted me about getting the license for the A:NR sound effects I had used in the OCTGN implementation to reuse in jinteki and casually mentioned that the Archer ICE noise was the coolest one. It had until now never occurred to me that people might appreciate the various sound effects I had inserted into the game back then for the flavour, so I did a quick search and run into this cute video about it (you can hear archer at the 13:00 mark).

Fascinating! I always like to make my games as flavorful as possible, and especially given the limitations of OCTGN, some flavour was sorely needed. So I had added custom fonts, little flavour blurbs in significant actions and finally I scoured the internet for hours and hours to find the sound effects which fit the cyberpunk theme of the various actions.

These were always meant to be just little things in an obscure game, so I’m kinda pleasantly surprised that some of them have received this sort of cult status in the netrunner community. Very cool. Hopefully these sound effects will find a second life in jinteki.net

If you want to check what the OCTGN game looked like, I have a tutorial video here, and I also have a bunch of videos about it on my youtube channel.

  4. June games played! Finished our Terminal Directive campaign; introduced some friends to Heat: Pedal to the Metal; got The Resistance back to the table for the first time in ages; finally got to try Undaunted: Normandy; tried the new leaders from the Expedition Leaders expansion for Lost Ruins of Arnak; and then a myriad of others (including playing SdJ nominee Captain Flip). What did you all play in June?

  5. Some of the games I played in April. A return to an old favourite in Android Netrunner, and some plays due to various award wins or recommendation lists: not a bad month! Elfenland was surprisingly good for its age, and I want to play The Quest for El Dorado again. What game from this month do y’all want to play again?

  9. Shout-out to @spencer on the NISEI team for putting me back on the #AndroidNetrunner track after playing a couple Netrunner games during the Wizards of the Coast era.
  10. I finally got the chance to play #AndroidNetrunner with a friend who happened to own a copy of the Fantasy Flight Games’ 2012 Core Set box, and it was exactly as good as I expected!

As a result, I decided to purchase a copy of NISEI’s 2021 System Gateway set through DrivThruCards. It’s mostly to support the volunteer-led initiative to perpetuate the game as I don’t expect to meet many fellow Netrunner players any time soon.

More importantly, it reaffirmed my hunch that I wouldn’t enjoy playing online as much, I like the feeling of the physical cards too much for this.
