May 13, 1983, 43 years ago today: Heading north from Springer Mountain, the tiny unincorporated community of Wesser, North Carolina is the first trail town through which the #AppalachianTrail physically passes. This corner of Wesser is a narrow strip along the floor of the deep, heavily-wooded, steep-walled gorge which the Nantahala River has gouged through the mountains.

May 13, 1983, 43 years ago today: The Appalachian Trail was a gently-graded path, meandering along wooded mountainsides, avoiding the summits of Tellico, Black, and Rocky Balds, but touching their ridge crests occasionally. After a long descent into Tellico Gap, it crossed a gravel road amid a dense cedar forest and began to climb Wesser Bald.

May 12, 1983, 43 years ago today: I walked non-stop for the first 10 miles. The final 6 miles of today’s hike were nothing more than a hazy blur of fatigue. I can barely remember anything of the trail past Wayah Bald until I reached the stubbly crest of a ridge crisscrossed by logging roads four miles later.

May 12, 1983, 43 years ago today: I walked non-stop for the first ten miles. This mountain pass marked the onset of a long climb up to the summit of Wayah Bald which was the grueling climax of the ten-mile grind. Along the crest, the AT joined a paved road which had also ascended from Wayah Gap. The hard surface was not kind to my feet, which had been pounded by my non-stop marathon.

May 11, 1983, 43 years ago today: It was 10:00 when I finished shopping. The streets were deserted except for me and some crickets. The store had been the only business in town still open, and it was just closing.

I stopped to buy a coke from something labeled “Talking Vending Machine.”

Dropping my coins in the slot, I was treated to the tinkling notes of a music box playing the song “Home on the Range.”

May 11, 1983, 43 years ago today: When I reached Winding Stair Gap, I found a parking area by the side of the new US Highway 64, a main thoroughfare in these parts. At the edge of the parking area, a pipe jutting out from a large rock formation was gushing out delicious, cold spring water. I filled up my water bottle and sat down to drink my fill before continuing on the Appalachian Trail.

May 10, 1983, 43 years ago today: By 4:30, when I reached Betty’s Creek Gap, I had already surpassed my previous longest day, having hiked almost seventeen miles. At that point I caught an intense second wind and made the ensuing two-and-a-half-mile ascent of Albert Mountain without a stop.

May 9, 1983, 43 years ago today: Dicks Creek Cap in Georgia is the point where the Appalachian Trail crosses a lonely stretch of US 76 less than nine AT miles from the North Carolina border. My tent was pitched in the woods just past the gap. A few feet away was a roadside picnic area beside US 76 where I could make and eat dinner and breakfast in style.

May 8, 1983, 43 years ago today: There is nothing like trying to pack up everything you own in a downpour. My sleeping bag was soaked, my tent was hopeless; everything was drenched. Adding insult to injury, the rain came to a dead stop about five minutes after I had finished packing.
