West of Wesser it had widened a bit, with a few more buildings visible, but it was still quite narrow.More of My 1983 Appalachian Trail Hike in Photos at https://www.georgesteffanos.com/places-i-ve-been
Note: I'm finally starting to work on my hiking blog for my aborted August hike. I'll have a link soon. A hard fall on a steep descent cut short my plans for a six-week hike after one great week. This will put off my sequel AT hike until 2027, but there will be new hikes next year.

May 14, 1983, 43 years ago today: After attaining the ridge crest of the Nantahala Range, the Appalachian Trail followed that crest westward paralleling the Nantahala River gorge, still climbing. Several viewpoints looked almost straight down a few thousand feet into the gorge.#backpacking #hiking #landscapephotography #NorthCarolina #nature #forest #mountains #AppalachianTrail

The ascent passed through vibrant jungles of rhododendron and hardwoods carpeted with moss and ferns and hung with vines and creepers. Flame azalea shrubs taller than me and bursting with vivid orange flowers brightened parts of the trail. From my book Then the Hail Came (A Humorous and Truthful Account of a 1983 Appalachian Trail Thru-hike). May 14, 1983, 43 years ago today: We finally dragged our libidos, kicking and screaming, out of Wesser at 1:00. After crossing the tracks, the Appalachian Trail began a major ascent, rising more than 3000 feet from the gorge. It was the biggest climb yet on the AT. Nevertheless, the trail was well laid out, and we were now LEAN, MEAN MILEAGE MACHINES, so it was no big deal.#backpacking #hiking #landscapephotography #NorthCarolina #nature #forest #mountains #AppalachianTrail

May 13, 1983, 43 years ago today: Heading north from Springer Mountain, the tiny unincorporated community of Wesser, North Carolina is the first trail town through which the #AppalachianTrail physically passes. This corner of Wesser is a narrow strip along the floor of the deep, heavily-wooded, steep-walled gorge which the Nantahala River has gouged through the mountains.#backpacking #hiking #landscapephotography #NorthCarolina #nature #forest #mountains #AppalachianTrail
