A study of cybersecurity literature on open-source software and AI – GOV.UK
Taking a moment to read this and celebrate the amount of personal effort gone into developing the Open Source AI Definition.
The UK government, “Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) commissioned this review to assess the cybersecurity landscape for open-source software (OSS) and open-source AI (OSAI), map global frameworks and practices, identify security gaps and emerging risks, and provide actionable early recommendations.”
In its key findings, the report says:
3. The most comprehensive definition available is the Open-Source AI Definition 1.0 (OSAID).
Published in October 2024, it requires that a genuinely open-source AI system make available its training data information, source code, and model parameters together, clarifying that openness should mean transparency across the full artefact chain, not just code access. UK policy should engage with it explicitly.
and later, in the recommendations:
1. Establish working definitions of OSS and OSAI.
Adopt the OSD explicitly, including for OSS used as an input to AI systems, and anchor the OSAI definition in the OSAID, distinguishing fully open-source systems, open-weight models, and partially open configurations, with obligations calibrated to each.

I’d like to publicly thank Kristof - @kp - for the care and attention he’s putting into every detail of the organization.
This morning, when the coffee machine ran out of beans and the guy from the hotel refilled it with Segafredo, Kristof thanked him with such genuine kindness that it really showed just how much he cares about every single one of us.

EuroBSDCon is not a traditional conference, but a family gathering. The kind of family you like, the one you choose, the one that always makes you feel at home.
As soon as we landed, we dropped our bags off at the hotel luggage room and rushed straight to the conference venue.
It was fantastic to meet old and new friends again, with that kind of welcome that only BSD conferences can give you.
I've only had the chance to talk to a fraction of the people I'll meet over the next few days, and to me, that's fantastic.

Months ago (or a year ago, by now), I bought a few Intel N150 mini PCs for dirt cheap, between 120 and 150 Euro each (depending on the RAM).
Two of them sat untouched on my desk for months, almost making me regret buying them.
Today, I'm glad I did: considering how high hardware prices are getting, having a little backup supply doesn't hurt.
And one of them is about to host SmartOS. -

"It's a static site. Here are the SFTP credentials to upload the files you have, which were generated by the client's SSG."
"You don't understand. I need to upload the site; I need the DevOps procedure."
"No, you don't understand. It's generated by BSSG; all you have to do is upload the output via SFTP into the FreeBSD jail and the deploy is automatic."
Silence.
"But how does the deploy bot handle it?"
Silence.
The person who hired him (as an intern) gets on the line:
"Just humor him, the kid is sharp-he's really good with AI!"I tell him we're talking about two completely different things.
He fires back: "If you can't keep up with him, I think you need to update your skills. That's what we're paying you for."
And that was that. I've decided that for 80 Euros a year - while providing a dedicated FreeBSD jail, over 100GB of hosting, backups, monitoring, and custom BSSG tweaks - they can definitely find someone more "up to date" elsewhere.
