I purchased a one-time license for #VueScan (apparently about a year ago) to run my ancient scanner under Linux, and this morning I got this email. I was almost shocked how straightforward, helpful, and considerate it was. I've gotten so used to software companies leaning into dark patterns and outright scamminess that I'd almost forgotten what it's like when a business respects its customers.

The eInk faceplate #Valve demoed for the #SteamMachine makes me wonder if there's some sort of power/data port hidden behind it. I'd love to turn one into a mini-#ThinkingMachines #CM2 complete with an array of blinkenlights representing system load.

The weave on these things actually looks kind of cool in the close-up photos, but man, what a supremely silly product to use it in. And that's coming from someone who actually bought and used an #iPodSock back in the day.

As for the game itself, I'm quite enjoying it. It's a solid #Metroidvania. I could wish that either the map was a little less sprawling or had a little more variety of enemies and environs, but overall it's a really solid indie game. And the world and story are weird and entertaining, just like the movie.
One warning though, it's over-the-top bloody, albeit all in stylized pixel art. So if that's not your thing it might not be for you. 5/5

So, yeah. Accessibility settings in games. They're nice, even if you technically don't *need* them. 4/N

#TurboKid lets you toggle any of these settings on or off at any time during gameplay. So I can turn on the health assist to give me a couple extra hits while trying to get through the hall of spinny saw blades of doom, or turn them all on if I'm really stuck on a boss. And then I can turn them back off so it doesn't feel so cheaty while I'm working my way across the map. I'm finding it a really nice way to smooth out the difficulty spikes without affecting the base difficulty of the game. 3/N

Overall difficulty settings are nice as far as they go, but they're limited. If I have to choose easy/story mode when I start a new save file, I often feel that it's too easy to blast through the exploration part that I really like. But higher difficulty settings may leave me stalled out at a tough boss battle. I just don't have time to grind through them any more. 2/N

I've been playing through the #TurboKid game on my #SteamDeck, and I've really been impressed with its extensive "Assist Mode" menu of difficulty/accessibility settings.
I've always loved the exploration part of #Metroidvania games, but I'm less of a fan of the precise platforming required by many of them and the steep difficulty spikes of the boss battles. And as my reflexes have aged and free time has dwindled, this has gotten worse. I've had to set some aside because I just stalled out. 1/N

Holy cow. I've been mulling a new desktop PC build and was thinking about the new #Intel chips to get #QuickSync. But those power consumption numbers... yikes!

@Myphatself Do the Servarr products help with local files? I haven't used them but I gathered that they were mostly for acquiring *ahem* "alternatively sourced" content.
I use #FileBot for naming the files once I know which one is S01E01, and it works pretty well (despite some unique ideas about UI). It's figuring out that title_01.mkv -> S01E01 that's the tedious part, and Callsheet helps smooth that out a bit.

Also on the #SteamDeck topic, I've had mine for about a month now, and so far I've mostly used it to play 35-year-old DOS and retro games ( #CommanderKeen FTW), and using #Chiaki to remotely finish some #PlayStation games. I'm... not really sad about this?

@serichards the department for education have essentially told #schools in the UK to only use AIs that have been evaluated to be "safe". Absolutely no guidance about what to do about the fact that no software vendor wants to provide an off switch that could be used to turn off "unsafe" AI... My #DayJob

The #SoulEV is on Pirelli CINTURATO ALL SEASON SF 3 which have fantastic feel in all conditions. This IS probably why I love driving it so much. Very confidence inspiring.
And the #e_Niro is on oe spec Nexen (only because they were 1000 miles old when I bought the car) which I don’t trust in any conditions, but especially so in cold damp conditions 😬👍

@serichards @ZeKik the widely available adapters solve and actually speed up charging on “normal” fast chargers so solve the Chademo problem
Not encountered the braking on rough surfaces problem myself. It’s far more consistent than the #e_Niro. My only real complaint is the over active traction control that just cuts power completely for what seems like an eternity (when pulling out of junctions) rather than modulating it like modern systems. Perhaps they changed things for the later cars?
