  1. @apalrd thank you for sharing your Linux VM Templates script!

Came across your post at apalrd.net/posts/2023/pve_clou

Gave me a big head start, appreciate it!

  2. Trying to avoid dependencies on Cloudflare or a VPS but it seems like the only sensible route when trying to open up a service to loved ones

  3. Finally accepting that we live in a different world and you cannot simply open up your WAN to something self-hosted.

  4. Quick test of the velocity sensitive buttons for the keytar.

I have to hold the 3d printed test rig in place so please forgive the shoddy note triggering. 😅 Overall it feels pretty good; there are 3 different velocity curves to choose from.

  5. It wooooorks. Well, mostly.

A more clever me would have broken out the 5V line for USB power since it already has a 3.3V voltage regulator -- had to get another regulator for the breadboard to connect to my laptop. Also, finally figured out how to make my own bootloader variant and configure the microcontroller pins.

Everything seems to be working so far. However, 3 of the 40 hall effect sensors are giving me weird values/unresponsive. Perhaps maybe I damaged them during the soldering process?

  6. The boards for the keytar are finally here. This may be the one I'm most excited about. 576 blinky LEDs that will serve as the main display for the faders, buttons, and XY pad.

  7. Do folks have opinions about the best base distro for hosting a bunch of docker containers? Should I just default to vanilla Debian?

I have several Portainer stacks that I aim to port over to separate VMs to be more finely tuned.

  8. Tada. A fully assembled keytar.

This should be enough to start ordering parts and building, but I want to try my hand at making some photo-realistic renders in Blender now. 😅

  9. Heh, keytar has SynthCarts now.

This is probably the coolest dumb/pointless feature I've ever added to a project.

I (eventually) want to make some digital synths and stuff them into cartridges so they're swappable with the keytar. Excited to make a few and slap some retro cart labels on them.

  10. I think I've finally finished the boards for the keytar. Unfortunately, I don't know of a convenient PCB manufacturer in the US that offers assembly. I can solder most of them myself, but the board containing 576 LEDs might be a job for a pick-n-place machine. 😅

I'm considering going through @aislerhq to have them made. Has anyone in the states tried them before? Guess I'm worried what the customs situation might look like. 😬 :boost_request:

    More keytar updates soon!

  11. Working out the enclosure for my metal slab of a keytar. 😅 Very much inspired by early analog synths.

Also my first time using the sheet metal workbench in FreeCAD. The tabs for the wood panel mounts didn't work like I initially expected, but everything went smoothly after figuring that out.

  12. About two and a half octaves of velocity sensitive keytar goodness. There will be four of these modules that can either operate together, as a single keybed, or divided into separate MIDI channels.

  13. Finally getting into the CAD portion of the keytar project.

I guess this can be considered the guts of the "guitar body" for the keytar. The LED board will respond to the capacitive touch panel above it – hopefully indicating fader positions, which buttons are toggled on, virtual string strumming, etc. The beige looking panel on top is a cork gasket to protect the touch panel from the aluminum enclosure.

(Obviously the pins of the cartridge slot will be trimmed down and not magically colliding with the stuff above it. 😅 Still have to decide on the final location when I design the body.)

  15. As #COP15 kicks off, here's a useful explainer on the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures - #TNFD - and why it's a long way from being up to the task of addressing the crisis of Nature.

The TNDF fails to put communities and Indigenous peoples affected by nature loss in the driving seat, and only treats damage to nature as a problem when it affects business profitability. A pretty big fail for an initiative backed by the likes of the UNDP and WWF.
