I spent a long time thinking about which software to use for PCB design.
Going down the route of free software means I might end up spending hours looking for workarounds for features that haven’t been fully developed yet.
Or I could go with the industry standard, assuming they offer a free version to start with until I reach the scale of a small personal business.
I was so naive…

The boards for the keytar are finally here. This may be the one I'm most excited about. 576 blinky LEDs that will serve as the main display for the faders, buttons, and XY pad.

I designed another PCB... Small preview without revealing what it will be. It'll arrive mid January, though.
They will be manufactured by @aislerhq again, using the 20% December discount for using their #KiCad plugin.
It'll have the option to use an AVR DA compatible #microcontroller or a #tinyAVR one - I added options for both that I have in stock (AVR32DA32 and ATtiny814). Since it won't use many pins, I could have used smaller variants, too.

I wanted to try out a few new things. So, I designed a development board for the AVR DA #microcontroller, the 32 pin #TQFP looked like something I'd be able to hand solder. I really like #UPDI from the ATtiny814. This is the result, my first four layer boards, first time with logos and an image. The image of #Frieren was a bit too small, though. Manufactured by @aislerhq again.

First draft of a small project page for the #NeXT #SoundBox mini. I will successively create similar project pages for the other models (#NeXTcube, #MegaPixel Display).
In front of it a landing page listing this and upcoming project pages.

This was a fast one. Last night I designed a small 2 layer #GPIO stacking header board for the #RaspberryPi that will be used in my #NeXTcube mini to provide a power and activity LED. It's in production at #JLCPCB already.

:twitter: finally seems to be flat-lining, trying out this new mastodon thing...
#introduction, for peeps I've not met prior via my bird app handle @ntpopgetdope. I'm a vulnerability researcher that's worked in the industry professionally for >4yrs
My background stems from an obsession with #windowsinternals & the vastly underrated 'HAL.dll'. These days I'm into baseband vuln research working on obscure hardware, architectures & attacks. Love chatting about all things:

First foray into OpenOCD has not gone well. 😅 I seem to be able to communicate with the SAMD21, but I can't flash the bootloader. First issue seems to be "no flash bank found for address 0x00040000". Now I just have to figure out what the f✖✖k that means.

Finally found some time to bring my #NeoPixel Heart PCBs into a usable state and add some documentation. The #sourcecode is hosted on @Codeberg at https://codeberg.org/rommudoh/NoisyMcHeart and works for both variants (big and small).
I think I'll publish the #KiCad files soon, too.
Thanks to #platformio I can use the same code for both hardware variants.

I’m working on the most unhinged board I’ve ever made. The squiggles are functional traces that pass DRC. Major shout-outs to @LaserMistress for giving me the itch to pick this project back up, @chipperdoodles for showing us all what’s possible with hand-drawn traces, and @ArchiteuthisFlux for diving into polygons and net connections with me, and of course, for always egging on my 10-year-old sense of humor. #kicad #pcbdesign #futerus
-
And the biggest shout-out: It is absolutely WILD that this is possible with @kicad and I hope everyone who works on it knows that their hard work has culminated in crazy shit like this. The fact that I just dropped a group of those spaghetti polygons over the design and they auto-connected and assigned nets based on the pads they were touching was 👩🍳💋. The fact that the DRC even runs on this is nothing short of a miracle. #kicad #pcbdesign #futerus

I have a project in mind that needs as short of a 7 pin big DIN male connector as I can get, ideally attachable to a PCB flush at its base. Ripping one out of a typical DIN cable is way too deep the way the usual in-cable housings work. This pictured part from a supplier on Alibaba is the closest I've found.
Does anyone have any insights on sourcing some in the US for prototyping? More precise terminology to describe the form factor or a better PCB mountable version?

When designing Bluetooth PCBs (e.g., JieLi AC695N/AC696N), pay attention to DC-DC layout:
• Prioritize short, wide ground paths – avoid long thin traces.
• Place decoupling caps near chip pins.
• Keep DCDC away from antenna, near battery.
• Inductor close to SW pin, no vias, no components underneath (especially MIC).
• FB sampling after output cap; divider resistors near FB pin. -
So I wonder if some considerable amount of the 1/3rd of my shipping cost made up of tariffs on a set of PCBs I’m having made at JLCPCB will be refunded before they are shipped. Might pose the question to their customer support…

Inspired by my last #WS2812B #PCB, I decided to do a smaller version and try to add a USB C connector. I'm very pleased how it turned out. The LEDs are not as close to each other as last time, but I still used my hot plate to solder them. And hot air for the back side.
Again, manufactured by @aislerhq and designed using @kicad

I have a dilemma.
I already have a mouse sensor for my new mouse design - the PMW3389. It's a flawless sensor, and it happens to be the same one used by the trackballs of the Svalboard, which is good because I need to write a Rust driver for RMK to support that chip anyway.
But my mouse is a _wireless_ device... and the PMW3389 is not particularly low-power. The PAW3395 would be a better fit, but then I need to redesign my PCB, and I'll have to write _two_ Rust sensor drivers...

PCBs arrived the other day, and I finally get to try out the combination fuse footprints I designed, and they seem to fit wonderfully 😍 they allow to use either 5x20 fuse holders or the car blade fuse things. Had some issues with spacing of holes when designing this, but the solution I found seems to work nicely

Ever wondered how a diode actually works? 🤔⚡️
It’s the "one-way valve" of electronics, but there's so much more going on inside! In my latest video, I break down the P-N junction, explain Forward vs. Reverse Bias, and compare common diodes like the 1N4003, Schottky, Zener, and LEDs.

The analog section of a Bluetooth audio SoC is where careful design pays off. Notes from the JieLi AC695N/AC696N guide:
For the DAC outputs, they recommend reserving positions for small inductors (100nH, 120nH, 220nH, 330nH) to form filters that can suppress high-frequency noise, specifically called out as TDD noise from a nearby mobile phone during calls.
