The study led by Sandra Eckert, CDE, analyses how large-scale soy land deals in Argentina & Brazil connect investors, trade flows & deforestation risk. Key findings:
🔹 14.2% of analysed soy areas are likely linked to #deforestation
🔹Domestic investors dominate
🔹 China is the main soy destination, but not a major investor
The results highlight the need for stronger, coordinated governance across global supply chains: https://t.ly/aK1L1 -

The project AgriPath began with a clear mission: to use digitally supported agricultural advisory services to promote sustainable agricultural practices among nearly 50,000 smallholder farmers in Africa and Asia – and to enable them to make informed decisions that improve their productivity, income, and climate resilience.
After five years, CDE’s Nicole Harari and Maurice Tschopp take stock – and offer key insights and lessons learnt: https://t.ly/LS32r -

Tackling biodiversity loss means addressing its roots: climate change and pollution – together. In the new LEVER project, researchers and local communities across five regions worldwide co-develop pathways to better govern the climate–biodiversity–pollution nexus – translating local values into policy and practical pathways for change.

A CDE research team in #Madagascar has investigated the social and environmental impacts of #mining analysing, among other things, #deforestation and #ForestDegradation over time and space. On closer inspection, it turns out that the largest mine in Madagascar is having a far greater impact on the forest than previously reported – despite the company’s efforts to provide ecological compensation. He has worked at CDE, @unibern, for 30 years and is one of the leading figures behind the global #LandMatrix network. The latter is a renowned, scientifically supported network that documents #landdeals by international investors. Shortly before his retirement, Markus Giger earned his doctorate with a dissertation on the topic.
