Africa imports processed wood products – even though it exports large quantities of timber. The result: massive trade deficits.
In a research project conducted by CDE (@unibern ) & the African Forest Forum, a panel of experts explored ways to strengthen intra-African timber trade and promote legal, sustainable forestry – for the benefit of the #environment , more local jobs and #PovertyReduction.

As demand for #carboncredits grows, a wave of land acquisitions has swept across the Global South.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of presenting some of our work to Patricia Danzi, Director of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), during her visit to Laos and the Mekong Region. The researchers from our office in Laos, along with colleagues from the Laos Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry , showcased the Land Concession Information System, a tool developed by CDE, @unibern , to enhance land management.

In East Africa, millions of hectares of land are under threat from Prosopis juliflora, an invasive alien tree species. Finding ways of stopping this invasion was the focus of research and implementation project conducted by an international team of scientists. They have now published a book on their findings. We spoke to CDE’s Albrecht Ehrensperger, one of the main authors.
