Manpuku-ji (萬福寺) in Uji, home to the Ōbaku Zen sect (黄檗宗), was founded in 1661 by the Chinese monk Yinyuan Longqi (隱元隆琦 aka Ingen Ryūki 1592-1673).
It is considered to be Japan's greatest Chinese-style temple. -
The manhole cover can be found within the recently developed 'Uji and Tea Town Historical Park' (お茶と宇治のまち歴史公園), where you can see small tea plantations and a visitor's centre that doubles as a museum and exhibition space.

👻Poltchageist, a tea ceremony master who died before perfecting his craft and now haunts a caddy of matcha (チャデス).
🍵Sinistcha, a creature that pretends to be tea in order to drain his victim's life-force (ヤバソチャ). -
In June this year two more Pokémon manhole covers appeared in Uji, the home of matcha in Japan.
Both are within easy walking distance of the Keihan Uji Station (and not particularly far from the JR Uji Station). -
🗺️🤔THE QUEST TO CATCH 'EM ALL(ish)🕳️✨
In 2018 Kagoshima was the first prefecture in Japan to have Pokéfuta (ポケふた) installed. Pokémon manhole covers can now be found in 35 prefectures!
I went to Uji to catch the latest 2 to appear in Kyōto. -
Atsuko-san arrived at work very bemused by a packet of matcha flavoured potato chips (yes, you read that correctly, matcha flavoured crisps)🍵🫨🥔
She gathered together Hinako-san and Juri-san to do a quick taste test.

Such is the recent popularity of matcha that you can find it used as flavouring for so many different foods and drinks.
Living in Kyōto you see matcha everywhere, but just when you think you've seen everything, you happen across something quite unexpected...

Trans. David Lanoue.There's been a trellis at Byōdō-in (平等院) for more than 250 years, supporting a huge wisteria (surely one of the city's most photographed).

Minamoto-no-Yorimasa's death is argued by some to be the earliest record of a samurai committing seppuku in defeat.
Beside Byōdō-in's Kannon-do (観音堂), built around 1230, is a fan-shaped stretch of lawn called 'Ogi-no-shiba' (扇の芝), upon which Yorimasa likely killed himself.

The original main hall stood closer to the river, but in 1053 the current Hōō-dō was constructed as part of an 'earthly paradise'.
Such was Byōdō-in's beauty that a famous saying went ..."If you are dubious about the existence of Amida's Pure Land, pray at the Temple in Uji".

After Michinaga passed away in 1027 the 'Uji Palace' (宇治殿) came into possession of his son Yorimichi (藤原頼通 992–1074).
When Yorimichi turned 60 years old he was inspired to transform the sprawling site into a temple, and made the priest Myōson (明尊 971-1063) first abbot.

Likely beginning as a summer retreat for Minamoto-no-Tōru (源融 822-95), the man who possibly inspired Murasaki Shikibu's "Hikaru Genji", the property passed through the hands of Emperor Uda, Minamoto-no-Shigenobu (源重信 - Uda's grandson), and on to the powerful Regent Fujiwara-no-Michinaga.

Byōdō-in's (平等院) Hōō-dō (鳳凰堂 'Phoenix Hall') was completed in 1053.
Once completely surrounded by Aji-ga-ike pond, the stretch of water helped protect the building from fires in 1336 and 1483 that completely destroyed the rest of the temple.

🎇🏮CHINESE LANTERN FESTIVAL🏮🎆
Kyōto has many light-up events during the autumn, but Manpuku-ji's is something to behold.
As one might expect from one of the country's few Chinese-style temples, the colourful lanterns are heavily influenced by festivals on the mainland.

Beyond the tea fields the woodland has been allowed to go to seed, with tea plants springing up here and there.
Japanese tea cultivation began in Ujitawara in Kamakura times (1185-1333), and the method of manufacturing green tea developed here in the mid-Edo period (1603-1867).

The tour of the tea fields ended with an informal tea ceremony in a woodland clearing. It was a magical experience sitting amongst the tea bushes that provided the leaves for the tea we were enjoying🍵

🌿TEA CEREMONY IN THE TEA FIELDS🍵
A few weeks ago Nao-san made the long trip into the hills of Ujitawara (宇治田原) to enjoy tea amongst the blooming tea fields of Yuyadani (湯屋谷).
As the flowers suck up precious nutrients, it's not so common to see them bloom free. -
