  3. After Michinaga passed away in 1027 the 'Uji Palace' (宇治殿) came into possession of his son Yorimichi (藤原頼通 992–1074).
When Yorimichi turned 60 years old he was inspired to transform the sprawling site into a temple, and made the priest Myōson (明尊 971-1063) first abbot.

  9. In June this year two more Pokémon manhole covers appeared in Uji, the home of matcha in Japan.
Both are within easy walking distance of the Keihan Uji Station (and not particularly far from the JR Uji Station).

  19. Minamoto-no-Yorimasa's death is argued by some to be the earliest record of a samurai committing seppuku in defeat.

Beside Byōdō-in's Kannon-do (観音堂), built around 1230, is a fan-shaped stretch of lawn called 'Ogi-no-shiba' (扇の芝), upon which Yorimasa likely killed himself.

  27. ✨😇A SLICE OF PARADISE🪷🎶

Byōdō-in's (平等院) Hōō-dō (鳳凰堂 'Phoenix Hall') was completed in 1053.

Once completely surrounded by Aji-ga-ike pond, the stretch of water helped protect the building from fires in 1336 and 1483 that completely destroyed the rest of the temple.

A few weeks ago Nao-san made the long trip into the hills of Ujitawara (宇治田原) to enjoy tea amongst the blooming tea fields of Yuyadani (湯屋谷).

  41. For a long time it was believed that crape myrtles had been imported to Japan from the mainland some time in the Edo period, but recently pollen was discovered in the pond bed at Byōdō-in (平等院) that confirmed trees were growing here before the temple (completed in 1052)!😮

  42. There is a tradition that Mimurodo-no-Inbe-no-Akita (三室戸斎部秋田) lived in this area.
Akita was godparent of Kaguya-hime (かぐや姫), the princess from the folktale 'The Bamboo Cutter' (竹取物語 'Taketori Monogatari').
Because of this, people pray here for a good 'love match'.

  43. 2) MIMUROTO-JI (三室戸寺)🎋

Located in the tea-producing district of Uji, Mimuroto-ji is affectionately known as the 'Temple of Hydrangeas' (アジサイ寺).
It's one of the region's most popular hydrangea-viewing spots.
10,000 bushes bloom in the valley below the temple's hall😮

It was only in 1990 that Mimuroto-ji drew up plans for a vast azalea and hydrangea garden on the steep slopes beside the main approach to the temple.
30 varieties of hydrangea can be seen throughout the grounds.

    #Uji #宇治 #Kyoto

  44. Viewed from the bottom of the 60 steps, 270 pots of white hydrangeas form the slim body of a dragon climbing through the sky (270 blue) towards the sun (60 pink).

The idea for this particular flower art came from the temple's 'Manihōju Mandara' (摩尼宝珠曼荼羅), a mandala that depicts white dragons protecting a sacred 'wish-fulfilling jewel' (如意宝珠).
Pink hydrangea at the top of the steps represent the gem.

  45. There is a belief that the first tea of the season (初物) has some extra special qualities that will keep you in good health all year.

    Get drinking🍵😉

Sencha (煎茶 'green leaf tea') is available from May, but the first matcha arrives in November.

Tencha (碾茶), the tea leaves used for matcha prior to being ground down, are prepared in May and allowed to age until the autumn, creating a gorgeously mellow flavour by November.

    #Japan #Kyoto #Uji #matcha #京都 #宇治 #抹茶 #初物 #新茶 #shincha #everdaymatcha

  46. The first leaves produce some of the finest (and most precious) tea, and so they are highly coveted🌿✨

Most farms will continue to pick the second and third growth of leaves, but flavour decreases with each harvesting and so Horiishichimei-en uses only the first picking.
