  1. The scroll in the alcove reads...
    "Kanza shite shōfū o kiku"🌬️🎐
    閑坐聴松風
"To sit quietly and listen to the sound of wind in the pines."

In the tearoom the sound of the hot water boiling is likened to wind rustling through pines.

  2. During the imperial celebrations the emperor symbolically eats the first new rice of the year, and gives thanks for a successful harvest.

At many shrines the harvest offerings are proudly displayed.

  4. Each guest that followed reluctantly sipped from the bowl, unable to disguise their disgust, but unwilling to disrespect Yoshitsugu.
When it finally came to Mitsunari's turn he did not hesitate. He drained the remaining Matcha (of which there was a lot), including the pus!

  5. 😈TEAHOUSE TERROR🎃

Nao-san thought it would be fun to shoot a short video in the tearoom for Halloween.

I didn't realise it would turn into a full horror movie...
...as dusk crept on, Nao-san relished her acting role a little too much😫😱

  7. Tea ceremonies are not likely to be affected any time soon, nor are we about to run out of matcha here in Kyōto for a long while.

There are of course concerns, but the message from our supplier was surprisingly positive...
It is time to start preparing for the future💪

  8. Some most excellent news...
Both Nao-san and Atsuko-san revealed this morning that they have long dreamed of doing a bungee jump🙌

Now we just need some TV execs to commission our show about extreme tea ceremonies😝

  9. Strangely hanabiramochi (葩餅), typically eaten during the first tea ceremony of the year (初釜), has a loose connection to the ayu.

The sweet is made from a circle of white mochi folded over sweet bean paste. At its heart a gentle pink colour glows, fading out to pure white at the edges.

  14. Tea ceremonies can often seem like sober and sombre affairs, so it was really nice to take these more candid shots of how fun the tea gathering was.

As a team we are rarely together, so events like this are important.
The young members made for fantastic hosts.

  15. It may not look like the most festive of treats, but New Year for Nao-san is marked by the arrival of her beloved 'turnips'🥹

She begins 'kabura' (かぶら) season with Nijō Wakasaya's (二條若狭屋) adorable offering.

How many kabura will she consume this winter?🤔

  16. Seiren-tei, the 'Tea-house of Bright Ripples', overlooks a small lotus pond. Renovated early in the Edo period, in 1896 an extension (the 'seiseki' 西席) was added during repairs.

Ashikaga Yoshimasa's patronage of the arts was pivotal in the early development of tea ceremony and 'teahouses'.

  19. 🍵🏖️TEA ON THE EDGE🍃🌄

With each new outdoor tea ceremony, Nao-san gets a little more daring...she's even expressed a desire for some sort of bungee jump-tea combo in the future (time to start Crowdfunding🤔).

For autumn's expedition, tea making on a cliff edge😵‍💫

  21. 🔥🍵HEARTH & HOG🐗🍡

Rittō (立冬), the first day of winter in the lunar calendar (this year on November 8th), marks the beginning of the new year in the tea world.
The sunken hearth, 'ro' (炉), is opened up and will be in use for the next half a year.

The tea ceremony year is divided into two parts: the 'Sunken Hearth Season' (炉 'Ro') between November and April, and the 'Brazier Season' (風炉 'Furo') from May to October.

  26. Honoured to be invited to Hatsugawa, first tea ceremony of the year. We enjoyed delicious food, good conversation, admired all the tea tools and of course the tea. So grateful. I love my sensei.
