prompt from twitter: zhuzhi-lang/xie lian, mutual rescue

"Shoo, shoo!" Xie Lian chased away the flock of birds pecking at some poor defenseless creature on the road. Left behind was a bleeding green snake tangled into itself.

It wasn't moving.

"Oh." Xie Lian examined it carefully, fearing he'd been too late.

He cradled the limp creature in his hands as he returned home. It remained that way through the gentle dabs of a clean rag and Xie Lian ripping strips of his robes to bandage its wounds. He set it on a bundle of his outer robes stuffed in the bamboo hat beside his cot.

"Good night, little friend," Xie Lian sighed. With a peck to its head, he went to sleep.

In the morning, it was gone but Xie Lian's robes were washed, mended, and neatly folded.

Xie Lian thought often of his little friend during his travels. He stayed in the abandoned hut for a few more nights in hopes it would return but he didn't see it again.

Months later he was walking on a mountain pass in heavy rain. Night fell an hour ago without a place to rest in sight. He trudged through the mud at a slow pace, his head bowed to keep the biting wind from blinding him and the sheets of rain pouring on the bamboo hat.

One misstep and he slipped on the cliff's edge. He prepared himself to endure whatever awaited him in the darkness below, nothing for Ruoye to grab in this barren landscape. Then his descent came to an abrupt halt. Something much thicker than Ruoye had grabbed him about the waist, lifting him back to solid ground.

"Thank you–" Xie Lian squinted hard, making out the form of a giant snake. "Is that you, my little friend?"

The snake released him quickly, giving the impression of shyness.

"Not so little anymore."

Xie Lian beckoned it closer. It hesitated then lowered its massive head. Xie Lian stretched onto his tippy-toes and placed the bamboo hat on top.

"Come along, friend," Xie Lian said with no regard for the snake's silent protests. "Together we can find a place to rest."

The snake hurriedly plucked Xie Lian off the ground.

Xie Lian patted his scales which were half the size of his hand. "Oh thank you. This will be much quicker."

Gliding effortlessly through the mud, the giant snake with a comparatively tiny hat atop its head escorted Xie Lian down the mountain. Each happy for the company. #svsss, #tgcf, #zhuzhi-lang, #xielian, #writing

Hi, hello, did you know I love rarepairs? Zhuzhi lang is so bright and cheerful and just a little bit odd, here, and Liu Qingge comes to realise* just how lucky he is there was a heavenly snake demon around when he needed one. A delightful little piece!

* hehehe

These were created as sort of stickers and/or tattoo design ideas. The snake/chain idea was inspired by a couple of MXTX characters I like. Personal work, not college.
