  1. One of my projects (that I actually get paid for in my day job) is a collaboration with #Austrian #startup #Cerabyte who are developing a new #archival #storage #technology using femtosecond lasers to write data onto ceramic glass film.

    They just got into the #Guinness Book of #WorldRecords for creating the world's smallest #QRcode (1.98 square micrometres).

  2. Hype for the Future 103/284: City of Casey, Illinois

    Introduction The City of Casey is located primarily within Clark County, Illinois, though the western end of the community also continues into Cumberland County. While primarily in Clark County, the community is often identified as significant on both sides because of the presence of numerous superlatives and largest items registered under “Guinness World Records” in recent editions. Information The community is bypassed by Interstate 70 and directly accessible via Route 40, with Route […]

  4. 🚧🎉 Congrats to the Californian construction worker who's now the reigning champ of breaking world records no one cares about! 🏆✨ Sadly, mere mortals can't read the riveting details without a magical TollBit Token. 🔒🙄

  5. Seventieth anniversary of Guinness World Records – in pictures.

  6. Try doing just about anything for 29 minutes and three seconds. Jogging, reading, listening. It’s not that easy. Vitomir Maričić, a Croatian freediver, amazingly held his breath for that duration, shattering the previous world record. Here’s how he did it, via @ScienceAlert:

  7. A couple of weeks ago, kiwis of many ethnicities came together in their thousands at Eden Park. They were there to perform Ka Mate, led by the kaitiaki of that haka, Ngāti Toa. For those who prefer to avoid YouTube and their DataFarming, I posted a copy of the Stuff video about it here;

    One purpose of this gathering was to take the Guinness World Record for haka performance back from the French.

  8. Did you know that Carleton County, New Brunswick, Canada is home to both the world’s longest covered bridge *and* the world’s shortest covered bridge?

    The Hartland bridge is 390 meters long and carries one lane of traffic over the mighty Saint John’s River. Meanwhile, in nearby Wakefield, the world’s shortest covered bridge is over 700 centimeters long and carries a few people over a rocky gorge separating the Irving gas station and the burned-out remains of the Covered Bridge Potato Chip Company.

  12. Cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko has set a new world record for the most time spent in space. Surpassing the previous record held by Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, Kononenko achieved this milestone during his fifth space flight.

    Kononenko surpassed the achievement of Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka who spent 878 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes and 48 seconds in space throughout five missions (1998-2015).

  13. Kicking us off on our first session of the morning was Matt Parker @standupmaths who shared how he's planning to break the world record for the most digits of π calculated by hand, for next π day (see his other attempts here: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLht). We also heard from Bob Huxley, who has also been thinking about π day, but this time on Mars where it turns out it's actually tomorrow! Annette Margolis then talked about her class' favourite (and least favourite) way to solve quadratic equations. John Hoskinson discussed Diffy Squares (mathforlove.com/2020/03/diffy-) and adapted them to generalised diffy N-gons - for odd N, you get repeating cycles! Nobody has ever said the word 'diffy' more times in the space of 5 minutes. Alistair Bird @outofthenorm shared about a mathematician who got inspired in the bath (but not that one), and what his discovery meant (turns out, not much, but it did inspire some nice results around Fermat's Last Theorem). Read more here: outofthenormmaths.wordpress.co Adam Atkinson talked about Misère Games, leading to his discovery of just how many semigroups of order 8 there are, inducting us all into membership of DOCTIAL (the Department of 'Crikey! That Is A Lot!'); and finally Harlan Connor got LOUD about signal processing - it's possible to have peaks in audio volume that are higher than the maximum value the system can store! #mathsjam #maths #pi #worldrecords #mars #piday #quadraticequations #classwork #teaching #diffysquares #baths #inspiration #misèregames #doctial #loud #signalprocessing #groups #monoids #semigroups #combinatorialgametheory
