  3. Today we’re sharing a slightly different piece of our reading list, stepping away, just for a moment, from the Leidenfrost effect to explore… the #physics of footballs ⚽

At every World Cup, the official ball is completely redesigned under strict physical constraints. Far from being a simple design object, it becomes a real-world laboratory for #FluidMechanics.

  5. I really enjoyed this article about using evolutionary biology tools to predict success of human players in soccer.

It starts with a great quote:
    > "In humans, as with many other animals, individuals advertise their ability to perform under pressure through ritualized combat, usually called sport. Elite performance in a sport brings status, resources and mating opportunities."

    Sounds about right!

  7. How much of your bouldering project is a physical bottleneck, and how much is a mental block?

Anxiety doesn't just make us hesitate; it actively restricts our ability to think creatively and see alternative "beta" on the wall. When we reframe that racing pulse as excitement and focus strictly on the puzzle, the performance shift is massive.

  9. Research shows that priming influence perceived difficulty.

In bouldering, Psychological Priming is the phenomenon where a prior stimulus (like reading a route or a specific warm-up ritual) modulates your cognitive and behavioral response on the wall.

  13. Proud to share our new systematic review on psychological determinants of performance decline, burnout, and recovery in competitive athletes.
The findings show that recovery is not only physical. Psychological readiness, resilience, mental toughness, motivation, and burnout matter too.
Grateful to my co-authors for this collaboration.

  27. How does carrying heavy loads in low-oxygen environments affect both brain and muscle? In their recent study, Baur et al. simultaneously measured brain and muscle oxygenation with the OctaMon and PortaMon to investigate the physiological response to thoracic load carriage in hypoxia.

By combining cerebral and muscular #NIRS data, the authors revealed how oxygenation patterns adapt under these demanding conditions.

  31. Trying to figure out a reasonable exercise schedule for myself, I decided to "do the simplest thing that could possibly work", and multiply heartrate zone by time in the zone, and add them together, to have a single number to look at.

I was sure the number is almost-entirely-but-not-quite nonsense, but turns out this is called TRIMP (TRaining IMPulse), a widely used metric in sports science.

Not sure if I should feel validated or be disappointed in sports scientists.
