  1. Robin Gibb, hello. Look at the stars they can attract in 1988. And Gary gives a decent interview: paying attention, Anthea?

"With a little help from my friends" - Wet Wet Wet

Marti in a natty waistcoat, the vocalist and centre of attraction for the band. Proof that it's a live vocal in the late choruses, the song needs some energy to not be predictable.

He was the successor to Morten Harket, but who has now replaced him as Swoonesomest Man in Pop?

  2. "With a little help from my friends" - Wet Wet Wet

From the album "Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father", a collection of Beatles covers raising money for charity. One of the NME's better ideas.

  3. "Yesterday" - Wet Wet Wet

All of rock history has been leading to this point!

Saggy old band cover thirty-year-old song, turn it into a dirge.

After this vapid, insipid Beatles cover, Wet Wet Wet went their separate ways.

It's a horrible end to a group who made some great music, but got eclipsed by their lead singer's ego - and his drugs habit. Remember them some other way.

  4. "Strange" - Wet Wet Wet

Anyway, you'll recognise Rosie Gaines' voice from "Diamonds and pearls", the title track to Prince's 1991 album (and, in my view, his strongest full album).

Wet Wet Wet were promoting their new album, celebrating ten years of pop superstardom (except 1990-91 when they were hurtling towards the dumper at a rate of knots) with their most predictable record yet.

Do we need that close-up of Graham's haircut? No, we do not.

  5. "Strange" - Wet Wet Wet

Evening all. Missed last week, so didn't get the chance to rave about Olive's splendid "You're not alone", a warm hug at the end of the night from some ultra-cutie we'll never see before or after.

Anyway, "Strange" is the new single by Wet Wet Wet. The Spice Girls are back to host, about the 255th time producer Mark Wells has featured them in his 13-week reign.

  6. "If I never see you again" - Wet Wet Wet

Lead single from the Wets' tin anniversary album "10". Completely in their comfort zone: undemanding light soul, with no particular effort to move with the times. And very little energy: it's no "Sweet little mystery", this.

Sooner or later, the Wets will transition to the nostalgia market; this release makes "sooner" more likely.

  8. Wet Wet Wet "Sweet surrender".

Mark Shaw of Then Jerico reviewed this for Smash Hits.

Is this a cover version? It sounds like one. If it's not then they've borrowed it from somewhere - I can't spot which songs they are but they've definitely ripped off two old soul songs. It's a bloody good record that will definitely be a hit. Wet Wet Wet disappoint me because their choice of song is so obviously commercial. They could wipe the floor with loads of bands if they really tried.

  9. How are people meant to squee over Marti Pellow when he's bobbing around all excitedly?

Dick Spratley - or whatever his name was - he didn't make us feel giddy because he moved when we saw him.

"Sweet little mystery" may be their best upbeat song, and the video's far better.
