I’ve been burned out on concerts for the longest time. My girlfriend drags me to so many shows against my will. For the first time in a long time, I’m having fun.
Why? I got to hear Rancid. They’re nice. I’m honestly surprised to listen to Green Day live and find the lead singer isn’t nearly as god-awful as he is on the radio. But I digress about whiny bitchy tenors who have matured their tenor voices, even if they have to yell at me to put my hands up or scream. Listen, I have the ticket. You entertain me. I’m okay with being a passive observer to a man pushing fifty singing about the second Bush administration. (Where have you been?)
Part of why I’m enjoying a forced day off of work is the Smashing Pumpkins. They were my introduction to rock music many years ago — “Pisces Iscariot” was in my boom box for months, including a night when my preteen self didn’t realize my headphones came unplugged (my father, late at night wouldn’t compare my music to any Allman Brother nor relative).
Later, as the band pivoted, they would cross a literal and calendar decade be my intro to electronic music, both followed by my first karaoke songs. I made my first ex listen to “Slow Dawn” years after the band’s breakup but years before the reunion with “Zeitgeist” and my ex’s slightly-jealous friends on release day.
William Patrick Corgan, James Iha, a guy who looks like Jimmy Chamberlin but not like Mike Byrne (but is probably the former), and the new guitarist (I don’t remember her name, sorry!) are on stage and I am transported back to elementary, middle, and high school; and then to college where I had to explain to a roommate that “smashing” was an adjective and not a verb.
Are William Corgan and his rotating cast the greatest band in existence? No, but they’re all I needed them to be. They hooked me for life. I got other people hooked. I wore a Zero shirt before I got fat. So did one of my college friends, though I will not dare comment on his waistline both from courtesy and not seeing him in person.
Anyway, Green Day doesn’t suck live, and I think I’m enjoying live music again. I could do without the $15 beers, but that’s a whole other rant.
If you liked this toot, I should blog about it, so grab my RSS/Atom feed, or follow me here.
