  1. #Australia: "Climate protests are specifically intended to give a small, controlled taste of the major disruptions that climate change is already causing, and will cause on a much larger scale in future."

  3. Climate activist Violet Coco was sentenced to 15-month jail in #Australia. Her crime was to block one traffic lane (out of 5) for 28 minutes.

Magistrate Allison Hawkins said that the climate activist had made an 'entire city suffer' with her 'selfish emotional actions'.

What about all the suffering caused by #Optus, #Medibank, etc. by leaking customer data? I am sure the consequences are far deeper and significant than having to wait in your car for 28 minutes. Why all those executives are not in jail?

  5. CW: The fund to appeal climate activist Violet Coco’s criminal sentence is growing

When #VioletCoco was sentenced to 15 months in gaol for protesting against inaction on #GlobalHeating, both the Liberal NSW premier & the Labor Leader of the Opposition, cheered. However in a remarkably short space of time a crowd funded campaign for her appeal has raised almost $40K

Most donations are less than $100. There’s a NSW election in March. The big political parties may have miscalculated #nswpol

  6. CW: Climate protest penalties

Spent a lot of yesterday fairly furious at the NSW Premier's comments on climate protest penalties. Sorry to post twitter link but @ketan has a thread summing up the staggering hypocrisy and should-be-criminal behaviour of the NSW government and fossil fuel companies.

  8. Adam Morton in the Guardian: "What is not in dispute is that the concerns of the protesters are real and increasingly motivated by a sense of desperation.

They are a response to a status quo bias that fails to address the scale of the worsening climate crisis."

  9. #Australia isn't a nation, it's a quarry. Nothing more. That's why the law and law enforcement are designed to protect miners no matter what. Locking up #climatechange protestors shows Australia for what it really is, a hypocritical nation with very thin skin that's obsessed with money above all else. #auspol #violetcoco theguardian.com/australia-news

  11. Just put in a donation to #VioletCoco Chuffed fundraising appeal. The page explains her #ClimateProtest actions in detail.
Jail for 15 months for stopping traffic on one lane of a bridge for 23 minutes highlighting the #climateemergency is clearly excessive.

Current laws of suppression of Universal #humanrights to protest undermines democracy. NSW, Victoria and Tasmania have passed Legislation to suppress non-violent climate and environmental dissent.

  13. CW: Climate activist sentencing - Violet Coco

I'm appalled by the sentence for Violet Coco - her crime was a non-violent climate protest that lasted for 25 minutes. She's been sentenced to 15 months jail and hasn't been granted bail before her appeal.

@arianewilkinson has a great thread on Twitter (sorry) about why we should show solidarity for Violet - even if you don't agree with her tactics.

There will be a rally for Violet in Melbourne tomorrow at the State Library and a representative from my household will be there.
