Ubuntu 24.04.2 Noble Numbat has been Delayed
Ubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat was released on April 25th, 2024, to give you the latest LTS version of Ubuntu, packed with awesome features and improved desktop user experience. Since then, the first point release of the LTS versions was released to bring more bug fixes and to bring general improvements to maximize your productivity.
The second point release of Ubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat according to the status tracking live document has seen some progress, including backport bugs and other tracking bugs. Ubuntu 24.04.2 was supposed to be released today.
Don’t be too excited, because the Ubuntu team decided to delay the release.
The release has been delayed to February 13th, 2025, because “some 24.04.2 images built this week did not include the HWE kernel.” Clearly, the 24.04.2 images were supposed to contain the Hardware Enablement kernel, but, apparently, those images didn’t include such kernel.
A public bug number 2098105 claimed that “as part of 24.04.2, we should have enabled the HWE kernel for desktop and server. Desktop switches to HWE by default, but server images need to offer both. Additionally, desktop flavors make that switch too at the same time. Unfortunately, this was overlooked for .2, but will be necessary for 24.04.3. The goal is to land that as soon as Noble .2 is out, so that people really needing the HWE stack will be able to grab a daily.“
Furthermore, there was a concerning mail, titled “Unacceptable HWE kernel behavior change in livecd-rootfs,” that provided further insights as to why the point release has been delayed. It was because there were some kind of management issues within the HWE kernel in flavors.

Alongside the bugs, we’ve seen two current blockers for this release:
- Kubuntu and Ubuntu Studio are blocked by Bug #2093184.
- Raspberry Pi 500 support is blocked by Bug #2092216.
This means that yesterday, the appropriate Ubuntu teams, including the SRU team, have started working on this point release of Ubuntu to meet the expected deadline of February 13th. Should there be any delay planned, we’ll update you.

Ubuntu 24.04.2 Noble Numbat to release on February 13th
Ubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat was released on April 25th, 2024, to give you the latest LTS version of Ubuntu, packed with awesome features and improved desktop user experience. Since then, the first point release of the LTS versions was released to bring more bug fixes and to bring general improvements to maximize your productivity.
Today, we’ve spotted the second point release of Ubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat according to the status tracking live document. Currently, it says that the second point release is in progress at this time, with the release of 24.04.2 slated to be released on February 13th, 2025.
The document also has links to both the outstanding bugs that may or may not delay the release of the point release and the release checklist that makes sure that the release is to be out at the highest quality the Ubuntu team expects.
Since the Discourse status thread was created, the checklist currently lists the status thread task to be done, along with a list of to-dos that are expected to be done prior to the final release, which is expected to be on February 13th, 2025.
Should there be any blocking bugs, the Ubuntu release team may decide to delay the release, but we hope that there will be no such bugs that cause the delay.
