  3. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🌧️🏜️ Heavy #monsoon rainfall caused deadly flash flooding in the #GrandCanyon on August 29, 2026.

#Drought and the 2025 Dragon Bravo #Fire had left parts of the #landscape more vulnerable to debris flows. #TropicalStorm #Karina supplied additional moisture, producing rapid water-level rises, damage to gauges, evacuations, fatalities, and extensive damage to the park’s #water pipeline.

  6. Although the level of moisture flowing through the sky doesn’t have a one-to-one relationship with rainfall amounts, having more moisture can boost the odds for rainfall extremes, if there’s a force to squeeze that moisture out, such as the cluster of thunderstorms that hit the #GrandCanyon.

This weekend, there was an additional force at play. Moisture from the remnants of #TropicalStorm #Iselle was flowing across the West, siphoned inland by a #HeatDome & further waterlogging the atmosphere.

  7. TD 94W is now #TropicalStorm #Gaenari. It is forecast to skirt northern Taiwan by Monday morning. Gaenari (개나리) is the Korean name for the Korean goldenbell tree (Forsythia koreana).

  11. Via Hawaii Emergency Management Agency

#TropicalStorm #Lala #Hawaii Update: Lala has organized and strengthened into a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour located 620 miles east-southeast of Hilo.

Lala is expected to strengthen to a Category 1 #hurricane as it nears the Big Island on Saturday morning.

Lala may pass south of the rest of the state on Saturday and Sunday, but heavy rainfall, flash flooding, damaging winds, storm surge, rough surf and rip currents will be a threat outside of the storm track.

Winds may reach 74 miles per hour on Hawaiʻi Island with stronger gusts, especially in higher-elevation areas. These winds could damage buildings, snap or uproot trees, make roads impassable and cause power and communications outages. Prepare now to protect life and property from wind damage.

Heavy rainfall up to 20 inches in local areas is possible, with dangerous flash flooding and landslides. Be extremely careful if you are near a waterway, valley, paved area or steep slope where flash floods and landslides may occur.

Coastal storm surge could reach 3 feet in coastal areas if storm winds arrive during high tide.

Make sure you understand the hazards in your area, have a safe place to go if you need to leave your home, review your family emergency plan, have emergency supplies ready and prepare your property for hazards and power outages.

Sign up for local emergency alerts in your area at ready.hawaii.gov/alerts.

    The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Storm Lala every 6 hours – 5 a.m., 11 a.m., 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. – at nhc.noaa.gov/#Lala

You can see active weather warnings for your island at weather.gov/hfo/watchwarn

  12. I wrote a blog post about my experience with Typhoon Dolphin, which affected Kikaijima last week. I found some boulders transported by the storm surge, which showed the power of this storm.
