Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #tropicalstorm, aggregated by home.social.

  1. It's only January 15, but the Western North Pacific already has its first named #TropicalStorm of the year.

TS #Nokaen is expected to skirt the eastern coast of Luzon, Philippines, as it intensifies slightly for the next 2 days. After which it will gradually weaken due to wind shear.

Nokaen (ນົກແອ່ນ) is the Laotian word for "swallow" (the bird, not the verb of ingesting food or fluids).

It's an unseasonably early storm. Who says #ClimateChange isn't real?

  2. #TropicalStorm #FungWong looks set to undergo rapid intensification before sweeping through Luzon, #Philippines as a very intense #Typhoon next Monday. Afterwards it will veer northeast and cut through #Taiwan around Wednesday and Thursday.

Lots of uncertainty far ahead, but there is consensus on the general direction from the models, as seen in this spaghetti plot.

JTWC predicts max winds of 115kts/132mph/213kph. CWA predicts max winds of 100kts/114mph/184kph.

  3. Can you believe Melissa is only a #TropicalStorm atm? #Jamaica is in its direct path. Here's to hoping #Mokko #Rastafarian can get his farm tied down, batter down the hatches.

  4. #TropicalStorm #Melissa - death toll at 4

    Haiti - 3
    Dominican Republic - 1

    Missing - 1
    Injuries - 6

Melissa is expected to become a major #hurricane by later Saturday or Sunday, before making landfall across central Jamaica on Tuesday morning

  19. potential path of now Tropical Storm possibly soon-to-be hurricane Humberto

    see image description or
    nhc.noaa.gov/
    for more info

    #hurricane #Humberto #wx #weather #TropicalStorm

  20. Still early days, but looks like #TropicalStorm #Ragasa will go through rapid intensification this weekend, and become a significant #Typhoon by Monday, packing winds of 120kts/138mph/222kph, and gusts up to 145kts/167mph/269kph.

It may enter the South China Sea through Luzon Strait, bringing gale force winds to southern #Taiwan and northern #Luzon, #Philippines. It threatens landfall near #HongKong, #Macau, and #Guangdong, #China.

But it's still 4–5 days out, with lots of uncertainty.

  21. There are now 3 named storms in the Western North Pacific:

    • TS #Mitag will make landfall near #HongKong as a weak #TropicalStorm some 24 hours from now.
    • TS #Neoguri will stay off any landmass in the next 5 days as it intensifies into #Typhoon strength.
    • TS #Ragasa will intensify greatly as a Typhoon, with up to 115kts/132mph/213kph winds and 140kts/161mph/259kph gusts threatening northern #Luzon, #Philippines or southern #Taiwan early next week.

  22. The moisture plume from post-tropical cyclone Lorena has moved into the mountains of southern New Mexico.

It's foggy, 47F, and slowly drizzling. We are getting needed moisture slowly. If it remains a drizzle, there should be no flash flooding.

    #NewMexico #Mountains #Trees #Photography #Rain #Monsoon #TropicalStorm #Lorena #Flood

  23. This all-sky/fisheye view of the sky is very unusual for New Mexico, especially during monsoon season.

Monsoon skies often feature lots of convection, cumulus clouds against blue skies, towering thunderstorms, localized rainstorms.

This sky is a uniform gray.

Tropical storm Lorena is pushing a solid layer of clouds into this region.

It's also pushing a plume of moisture that's causing a uniform, steady, slow rainfall. The weather radar image shows how different that precipitation pattern is compared to the localized afternoon monsoon pattern of thunderstorms is over Arizona and northern New Mexico.

    #NewMexico #Monsoon #Hurricane #TropicalStorm #Rain #Lorena #NMwx #Arizona #AZwx

  24. Tropical Storm Henriette has formed in the Pacific, looks like she is going to get closer to Hawaii than the last few storms. #Henriette #TropicalStorm #TropicalWx #Tropics

  25. @realTuckFrumper
We should expect a #Sharpie Enhanced trajectory map of #TropicalStorm #Gil any day now showing it heading directly for DC, with T**** & MTG accusing the "#Democrat Weather Control Machine" of "targeting" #MafiaDon.

  26. That mofo storm just ripped my front porch roof... had to do some reinforcement in the rain that it didn't fly away... 😎
It needed a renewal anyway... 😝 I'm glad our neighbours have all strong buildings, and nothing flies around like a bullet. #tropicalstorm #strongwind #Phuket

  27. #TropicalStorm #Nari (나리; Korean for lily) moved past Hokkaido last week. A new #TropicalDepression will soon become #TropicalStorm #Wipha (วิภา; Thai woman's name):

    • It will skirt northern Luzon, Philippines by Fri evening, before entering South China Sea on Sat.
    • It will brush past Hong Kong and Macau by Sunday pm.
    • It may make landfall as a #SevereTropicalStorm on Leizhou Pen., in Hainan, China, or in Vietnam on Tue.
    • It might not reach #Typhoon strength though. We'll wait and see.

  28. #Taiwan will start to feel the change in weather soon, thanks to #TropicalStorm #Danas! The CWA has just issued Land Typhoon Warning for #Chiayi, #Tainan, #Kaohsiung, #Pingtung, #HengchunPeninsula and #Penghu under an hour ago, and the warning areas are expected to extend northward throughout the next day or two. Much of the west coast will see > 80% chance of storm force wind conditions between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

  29. Two tropical cyclones in the Western North Pacific at the moment:

#SevereTropicalStorm #Mun is expected to briefly reach #Typhoon strength by Sunday morning. It will not affect any major landmass.
#TropicalStorm #Danas will intensify as a Typhoon, and move NE along the Taiwan Strait, skirting the west coast of #Taiwan on Sunday afternoon and much of Monday.
    • Mun is the Yapese name for the month of June; while Danas is a Tagalog word, meaning "to feel".

  30. Hey look! It's #TropicalStorm #Sepat, tropical cyclone №.2 in the Western North Pacific this year.

    • It is expected to skirt the east coast of #Honshu, #Japan, by late Wednesday night and Thursday morning, before steering back out to sea.
    • It is not expected to strengthen beyond #TropicalStorm intensity.
    • The name Sepat is the Malay word for a genus of fish in the gurami family.
