  1. One week after the TLP 1.8.0 release there are already official distribution packages: Arch Linux, Debian 12 backports, 13 and unstable, as well as Fedora Rawhide and Ubuntu 25.04. The remaining Ubuntu versions are covered by the TLP PPA, Fedora 40/41 by the tlp-updates Repo. See Repology for even more.

  2. After the successful beta test, TLP 1.8.0 is finished.

Battery care is at the forefront of this new release, with charge thresholds and recalibrate/discharge for and laptops, and charge thresholds for laptops. See the release notes and the full changelog for details.

  3. In the meantime TLP 1.8.0 Beta 1 packages are available for Arch, Debian/Ubuntu and Fedora:

  4. TLP 1.8.0 Beta 1 is now available and I would be grateful for your help with testing.

Of particular interest: for the first time, charge thresholds are supported for laptops as well as and laptops. The latter two can also recalibrate the battery.

  7. I am pleased to tell that users can now obtain official distribution packages for TLP 1.7.0 from , Sid and (to name only a few). As always, users are served from my PPA first:

  8. For owners of and laptops who want to control charge thresholds with TLP, today is the day 😁 Come and test:

EDIT: Dell needs kernel 6.12 (not released yet). Stay tuned.

  9. With 6.11 the turbo switch /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/boost works again with -pstate (in all modes). This means that the TLP parameter CPU_BOOST_ON_AC/BAT works again - without changes to TLP. Nice.

  10. The beta test was a success, and I’m proud to announce the final release of TLP 1.7.

Enjoy charge threshold support for Apple Silicon Macbooks and MSI laptops, as well as laptop screen power saving with AMD’s Adaptive Backlight Modulation. Plus, you'll get a whole lot more features and bug fixes.

  11. I have just released TLP 1.7 beta 2 and would be so grateful if you could test. Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help.

  13. I'd absolutely love to find more testers, especially for the new features of TLP 1.7 beta 1. I'm thinking of Apple silicon MacBooks, MSI laptops (charge thresholds) and laptops with AMD CPU/GPU (display panel power savings).

If something is holding you back, let me know.

  14. It's high time again, I proudly present TLP 1.7 beta 1.

As with every beta, I'm looking for great people to join the test team --> github.com/linrunner/TLP/issue

  15. @MichaelNROH Great video. Gives a good overview on how to increase battery life with TLP. Precise and knowledgeable argumentation.

  16. TLP code for charge thresholds on Macbooks improved once more. I'm still looking for a volunteer who has an Apple Silicon Macbook running and wants to test charge thresholds.

  17. @dln @neil

The hwdb approach is interesting. However, so far it implements only threshold recommendations. Unfortunately, not all laptops/vendors support the full 0..100 range and not all have start *and* stop thresholds.

  18. @conamara thanks to the great responses from @linrunner (maintainer of #TLPLinux) in the #ArchLinux forum, I got quite a bit more insight into how all this works…

Unfortunately, a "tlp recalibrate BAT1" changed nothing, so I might try a reset of the EC (embedded controller) next.

  19. The TLP plugin for charge thresholds on Apple Silicon is ready for testing. Since I don't have the hardware myself, I'm asking the community for help:

  21. TLP 1.6.1 packages

Meanwhile, (official) distribution packages are ready:
    -
    - Sid - Don't want to wait for the Bookworm backport? Use the package from Sid
    - Tumbleweed
    - - still takes time (due to 23.10 freeze), use the PPA

    Check for other distros.
