  1. Life Experiences fit Together like a Mosaic….Sometimes

April 1, 2026 Three recent experiences connected in my mind last week. The pieces clicked, as in a mosaic. These three experiences led me to stories about people who saw demand for services that were unavailable. Their instincts led to successful companies. The first experience was a talk I went to hear by a business professor. He introduced himself by describing his usual pitch to students, which is to ask them what motivates business. He said the answer is usually money. He responds to […]

  5. N-Possible Couplers

I got my first look at N-Possible couplers, a new scale-size N-scale coupler, at Tim Horton’s place just before Christmas. He had a pair of box cars on a test track, and I was immediately impressed by how well they coupled, and then easily uncoupled with a pick. While I could barely see them without my reading glasses, I was astonished by how small they were.

Gary Hinshaw is all in on these little marvels, and Tim and I stopped by to see his progress shortly after Christmas. He was never happy with the operation of MicroTrains couplers on his big hill, and after putting N-Possibles through the test, he leaped in with elan. He demonstrated their superior operation by pushing a train backwards up his Tehachapi Loop, which would have dropped cars all over the roadbed before replacing the couplers. Gary has nearly finished converting his 400-car fleet.

I was interested to see if the patent-pending design could be adapted to HO scale, which it can, of course. The proprietor of N-Possible was an HO-scaler before getting shrunk to N-scale, and he’s indicated an interest in extending into HO. However, Gary and the other N-scale super-fleeters are keeping him busy; so it’s going to be a while before we see them. Until then, we’ll just have to be patient, and live with the pretty good offerings we have in HO. There are exciting times ahead, however!

Gary inspects a coupler installation on one of his fleet.

  15. Had an absolutely hair-tear inducing conversation while ordering at #TimHorton here - a place I only go when I am too lazy bcoz it is the nearest #coffee place.

Me: Hi, I would like a decaf Americano
TH: Is that a decaf or an Americano?
Me (very puzzled): An Americano made with decaf beans?
TH (irritated): No such thing. I can make a decaf for you, or an Americano
Me: How do you make decaf?
TH: I press the decaf button and then add hot water
Me(screaming silently inside): I will have decaf then

  19. For #TombTuesday, we visit the final resting place of #TimHorton, late NHL hockey player & founder of the doughnut restaurant chain that still bears his name. In 1974 at 44 yrs, Horton died in a single vehicle rollover driving home to Buffalo following a game in Toronto. Alcohol & drugs contributed to the collision. He is interred at the York Cemetery in Ontario, along with his wife and two of his four daughters. Although no longer Canadian-owned, #TimHortons remains very popular in Canada.
