Eran momentos difíciles los que se corrían en 1921. Irlanda batallaba por su independencia y le plantaba cara desde hacía dos años a su poderoso vecino. Incendiar casas de integrantes o simpatizantes de la causa republicana eran algunos de los habituales atropellos del ocupante. Las fuerzas del IRA tomaron debida nota y decidieron responder a estos abusos. El lugar elegido para la represalia sería el castillo de Moydrum cercano a la localidad de Athlone y habitado por Lord Castlemaine junto a su familia, integrante de la Cámara de los Lores británica y opositor a la causa irlandesa. Durante las primeras horas del 4 de julio, una multitud se acercó al lugar, sacó pacientemente a sus ocupantes explicándoles la razón de lo decidido para luego proceder a incendiar la enorme y ya vacía edificación de 34 habitaciones construida en 1812.
Esta historia, que muestra la crudeza pero también la nobleza del proceso independentista, es el prolegómeno para comprender la tapa del trabajo de #U2 que se exhibiría en las bateas el 1° de octubre de 1984: #TheUnforgettableFire
