I have to admit that first seeing Liu Yaoyuan as the elegant mastermind Wang Zhi in 'The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty', and then as a childish and clumsy crownprince in 'Back From the Brink' is slightly jarring (since he does both justice). You won't regret watching either series, but if you watch both - start with Back From the Brink.

As much as I love Hengdian World Studios the modern, factory made bricks* in the brick walls annoys me _every_ time.

(*Yes, the difference is visible.)
There's an added dimension to general Gao's wife refusing to recognising him; as a widow she has one of the highest levels of autonomy a woman in imperial China could have. As long as she stays a widow and care for her husband's estate she's his de facto stand-in*. If he comes back from the dead she loses that, and that's not fun - regardless of how kind the man is.

(*There are a lot of interesting court cases about this.)

Tang Fan did an extremely good job being a woman, why is everyone laughing?
The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty holds strong. I enjoy it A Lot, but I wouldn't be me if I didn't ➡️
Series: *eunuchs are holding a Polite And Pointedly Pointed discussion*
Me: The fabric in their robes are printed! I wonder if they had that or if it's a cost thing?
Series: *main characters are walking/fleeing/doing badassery to save the empire*
Me: OMG, those pleats are *crisp*! I'd love to see the studio that made the costumes!

I wish I didn't notice who produced "The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty"* because now I can only see Kylo Ren being the straight man to a twink Jackie Chan. Even so a highly enjoyable show.

(Consider this my May the 4th toot. Have a great day to all who celebrate!)
Watching 'The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty', because a threadbare, foodie official who spend most of his days writing novels is relatable...
...for some reason.
