Le #numérique représente en 2020 2,5 % de l’ #EmpreinteCarbone française et 11 % de la consommation d’ #électricité.
Ces chiffres justifient à eux seuls la prise en compte du secteur dans la planification écologique, mais leur croissance prévisionnelle à deux chiffres à l’horizon 2030 implique de réfléchir puis d’agir avec volontarisme.

Un point-clé notamment est d’éviter que les actions d’optimisation engendrent des #EffetsRebond réduisant à néant l’efficacité de ces mêmes actions. Cela implique de questionner les modèles économiques à l’œuvre afin de pouvoir opérer une réorganisation collective des offres et des usages numériques.

Répartition de l'empreinte carbone entre les phases de production et d'utilisation
La phase de production des #équipements occupe une part tout à fait significative, près de 40 % en 2019, dans l’empreinte carbone totale du numérique.
Cette part est d’ailleurs prédominante pour les équipements intégrant un nombre important de fonctionnalités et faisant l’objet d’une utilisation intermittente. Ainsi, un smartphone conservé deux ans voit-il son #EmpreinteCarbone se réaliser à plus de 80 % avant sa première minute d’utilisation.
Une bonne partie des enjeux environnementaux du numérique n’est donc pas liée à l’usage que l’on en fait, mais en grande partie au volume de matériel produit, à son processus de production, et à sa durée de vie.

A l’échelle d’un pays comme la #France, bénéficiant d’une #électricité fortement #décarbonée, les émissions embarquées peuvent dépasser 80 % de l’empreinte totale du #numérique (Sénat - Citizing - Virtus Management, 2020).
