@plazi_species very interesting work about the #tarantula genus #Aenigmarachne (#Theraphosidae), formerly monotypic with a species known from Costa Rica, now with a #newspecies described from both genders and discovered in #Colombia, thus extending the former known range of the #genus.

🕷️My beloved young friend FLUFF/Y ❤️
Almost a hundred million years of Theraphosidae, so I, homo sapiens sapiens, pale in comparison to you.

An unexpected spotting. IDed as a Singapore Frontdoor Tarantula (Phlogiellus inermis), seen resting on a leaf next to the path at one-north Park: Fusionpolis South, Singapore, on 21 Nov 2023. These spiders are usually nocturnal, so seeing one in daylight is unusual.

Meet _Chilobrachys natanicharum_, a newly described tarantula from Thailand with legs that iridesce with "a blue-violet hue resembling the color of electrical sparks". You seriously gotta see this. https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/106278/ :OpenAccess:

Some tidbits of #OpenAccess #Arachnews:
- a new high-level #phylogeny of #Solifugae, the bizarre and enigmatic arachnids known as "camel spiders", "wind scorpions", "sun spiders", and so on. From Siddharth Kulkarni at UW-Madison's Sharma lab and featuring all the usual suspects in the authors list, like solifuge expert Paula Cushing, Efrat Gavish-Regev, Danilo Harms, etc. :OpenAccess: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isci.2023.107684

There are only 2 genera of #Theraphosidae protected under #CITES - Mexican #Brachypelma and Indian Poecilotheria. Poecilotheria are also found in Sri Lanka, but those species are not listed... although they should be.
Poecilotheria are arboreal and one of the most sought after genera in the hobby. There are about 20 species available and some people's entire collection is made up of only Poecilotheria.
