My latest photo project is about #macros in the #goldenhour of an #urban #park in #Berlin. Correspondingly, my latest YouTube photo publication shows the #lichen #Xanthoria #parietina (#Teloschistaceae), which is associated with #algae of #genus #Trebouxia. The yellow color of the ecologically tolerant lichen is due to the anthrachinone #parietin.

Since the #scientificname of a #species consists of two main components—#genus and #epitheton#taxonomists describing #newspecies regularly face the question: what should I name my species after? Personally, I prefer an ecological characterization of the species via its #epithet. But scientists/celebrities are also frequently honored. The fact that it was now even an entire #televisionseries is a great anecdote, but has strict reference to nature work (BBC#BluePlanet)

  3. @plazi_species very interesting work about the #tarantula genus #Aenigmarachne (#Theraphosidae), formerly monotypic with a species known from Costa Rica, now with a #newspecies described from both genders and discovered in #Colombia, thus extending the former known range of the #genus.

  4. Shown is a #fly of the #genus #Sarcophaga, not being determined on a #specieslevel. It belongs to the #cryptic S. carnaria-#speciesgroup S. #carnaria itself is distributed throughout the #Palearctic region and is a #parasitoid of earthworms. H. E. Moore et al. (2021) used #cuticularhydrocarbon (CHC) profiles to differentiate 11 Sarcophaga species (including S. carnaria) from each other

  7. Open access article, and the "non-technical summary" section near the beginning gives an overview everyone can understand. 🧪🦖

Very short version: #Troodon was considered a valid #genus for well over a century, until it was merged with #Stenonychosaurus about a decade ago, and due to specimen quality Stenonychosaurus took priority. Now careful examination indicates Troodon is a valid genus again.

This process is familiar from other famous #dinosaur genera, most notably #Brontosaurus and #Apatosaurus. Even *living* animals are hard to classify a lot of the time; nothing between #kingdom and #species is really set in stone. The tension between "#lumpers" and "#splitters" never ends.

Troodon is special. Maybe it was intelligent, in a way we'd recognize as such, and maybe it wasn't. But it was almost surely *smart*, and quite possibly social, and likely an omnivore. Does that remind you of anyone?

Maybe I'm fooling myself, when I feel a kinship across deep time. And maybe I'm not.

  8. The #Kingvulture #Sarcoramphus papa (#Cathartidae) is distributed from southern Mexico to large parts of #SouthAmerica. The strikingly #colorful species is the only representative of its #genus. It hunts smaller vertebrates and prefers carrion. At #carrion sites they successfully drive away other vultures. Usually only one egg is incubated, which is deposited in a tree holes etc.; no nest is built.

    „ meinen Morgenlatte …”

    Deitsches Sprak sein schwärres Sprak.

  11. #Troodon may once again be a valid #genus. Or, uh, so I’ve heard.

#Brontosaurus is smiling, and #Diatryma is waiting patiently.

  12. ICYMI, meine #Doktorarbeit, „Genusresolution bei mittelhochdeutsch beide“, wurde vor kurzem veröffentlicht 📚📕 ICYMI, my #PhDthesis, “[Gender resolution of Middle High German beide ‘both’]”, has recently been published:

  13. “For example, there’s a good argument to be made that #humans, #chimpanzees, and #bonobos all belong together in one #genus, either #Pan or #Homo. It’s only our desire to see ourselves as something special that causes us to put them in one genus and us in another. If #ravens—probably the smartest living #dinosaurs, although some #parrots give them a run for their money—were building a #taxonomy, they’d undoubtedly lump us together with our close relatives. But they might go to great lengths to separate themselves from #crows!”

I like to think I can still turn a nice phrase now and then.

  14. #Fossil found on the side of the road is a new #species of #mosasaur
In 2015, Deborah Shepherd notified a park ranger about an exposed fossil. That ranger notified ND Department of Mineral Resources. Her actions led to discovery of what scientists say is not only a new species, but an entirely new #genus of mosasaur, a giant marine predator from #Cretaceous seas. Bite marks preserved on fossil suggest that it met its end at the hands—or rather teeth—of another mosasaur.

#Mushrooms do indeed exist in all conceivable forms, as this pretty 😄 example from the mushroom #genus of the #jellycup shows.

  17. "It is an exceptional #discovery as it is one of the most colorful #species in the #genus #Tylototriton . This is also the first time that a #crocodile #newt species is recorded from the Central Highlands of #Vietnam . Occurring at elevations from 1,800 to 2,300 m above sea level, this discovery sets an elevational record for the genus in the country, with former distribution ranges between 250 m and 1,740 m," says #discoverer and first author of the study Trung My Phung.

  18. Does anyone have some guidance to offer on using #hashtags with #BinomialNomenclature? What should I prefer: a single hashtag of #GenusSpecies, two separate hashtags for #Genus and #species, or something else?

Continuing down this path, what should I consider when writing a hashtag indicating a selected form like Rhododendron davidsonianum 'Ruth Lyons' or indicating the epitaph refers to a hybrid such as Rhododendron 'Unique'?

  19. We are very happy to learn that our paper was the 5th most cited among the ones published on #GENUS during the last three years. This was a collective effort led by @ecamposlima with colleagues from different Latin American countries.

  20. #FossilAdventCalendar Day 17

This #whale-sized #marine #reptile in the #RoyalTyrrellMuseum is the #ichthyosaur Shastasaurus sikkaniensis. Unusually, it was not only one of the earliest members of its group, but one of the very largest. Its #species name comes from where it was found, along the Sikanni Chief River which flows out of the #RockyMountains of #BritishColumbia 🇨🇦. Its #genus name comes from Mt. #Shasta in the #CascadeRange, where other species of this Triassic titan have been found.
