I hadn't seen either my Caribena versicolor or my Psalmopoeus irminia in quite a while. It's really not that uncommon for a #tarantula to keep itself hidden way for what feels like impossibly long stretches of time but it seemed remarkably so this time.
I went to do a wellness check and discovered one VERY annoyed P. irminia and one VERY crunchy C. versicolor. It's a shame because the C. versicolor was always one of our favorites. We picked it up as a tiny little sling 6.5 years ago from the Show Me Reptiles Tarantula Takeover in St. Louis, MO - where I also met #TarantulaKat and #Petko of #theDarkDen.
I can't believe we're down to only 3 #tarantulas from our peak of 17. Tarantulas were an intense #SpecialInterest that lasted years. -

#Trapdoor #spiders are small, secretive relatives of #tarantulas. Females live their entire lives underground in silk-lined burrows sealed with a hinged, camouflaged door. They wait quietly for vibrations above, emerging only to catch prey that wanders too close.

So, apparently, if you ever want to scare a group of workmen, mention that you have tarantulas in the attic, and request that they just shoo them out of the way if they see them. To be fair, they mostly hide from people, but I like my tarantulas and don’t want them squished. Plus, they’re the reason I don’t have a mouse problem in the attic.

An unexpected spotting. IDed as a Singapore Frontdoor Tarantula (Phlogiellus inermis), seen resting on a leaf next to the path at one-north Park: Fusionpolis South, Singapore, on 21 Nov 2023. These spiders are usually nocturnal, so seeing one in daylight is unusual.
