  1. I love/hate the idea of #SciFi #transporter or #teleporter tech…

In Wil McCarthys "The Queendom of Sol"-books, there's a most elaborate description about how those things might work (and it's not like in star trek… that one is described in a way to mostly ignore the problems, while McCarthy describes his version so that he can DISCUSS the problems)

    anyways…

McCarthys transporters take you apart and reconstruct you on the other side on a subatomic level. And to make it more fun, there's a software layer that enables filters that take that data and remove unwanted things. (star trek claims it doesn't take you apart AND has filters… think about how that should work!)

Like… you have a filter that removes the known structure of some harmful virus from the output. Or a more complex one that corrects your vision or repairs your broken arm.

Got injured? Make a short teleport trip and you're fine again!

And this is creepy on so many levels.

    Like…

    Got old? Same cure!

If you are clinically depressed (40% happens for genetic reasons, but lead exposure, medication and other physical conditions are common reasons too) and after teleporting, you are cured… Is that really still you on the other end?

What if you were bipolar, manic or too happy instead? (much of your emotions is chemical in nature - and that what isn't, still has to be recreated, so the transporter can "fix" you)

What if it fixes your genome?

Or how about… What if it fixes your tendency to revolt against the current regime?
