#Writephant 2026.0504 — A2. Do you have a favorite work that is either set in space or a celestial body that isn’t Earth?

Plenty. Not only do I write SF, I read it. However, let's stick to media.

I love Firefly. From beginning to end, it was weirdly interesting and fun, with a pure demonstration of how to lampshade facts you really don't want to have to explain. I'm often offended when obvious science is gotten wrong, but the characters and plot lines had their own consistent logic and I went with the quirkiness.

I also loved the last series version of Battlestar Galactica, except for the very last episode. They made a think about FTL rules, and I felt they got the military milieu exceptionally well, with the robotics explained well enough to make it all consistent and believable—except for the very end where the story went so far off the rails, it launched the locomotive directly to high orbit. Otherwise, good SF, showing how technology affects humans.

I'll give a shout out to Babylon 5 for mixing idealism and multiculturalism in a way much better than most TV SF ever did.

Two things I've always thought about the Fermi Paradox
    1) We don't know what technology They use, so it's just guesswork as to what we're looking for. A bit presumptuous to write off the whole Universe as empty.
    2) The Universe is BIG and we're barely explored it yet, we've only been listening for radio for about a 100 Earth years, that's nothing in this big old universe. And who wants to communicate at the Speed of Light?

  3. I remember watching this 10 years ago when #FTL came out
    youtu.be/RVHw5Hcat9s

I think I was subscribed to Doormonster ten years ago. But then unsubscribed at some point and then resubscribed last year when she started making those great video essays (check recent videos)

  4. 'We have been lurking in cloaked ships out by Jupiter for approximately seventy five earth years, watching.'

    That long huh?

'Yes. We felt that you would... should be able to figure your problems out and come together as a species. Then we would make oursleves known and give you #fusion, #hoverboards and #FTL travel.'

Ah, like the #PrimeDirective from #StarTrek.

    'Yes.'

    So what changed, why now?

  6. #AppleMaps walking directions are rubbish. I tried using them in Brighton, and they failed me each time. I always knew more direct route. It's as if they follow car directions. #ftl

  7. I can literally scream "Auxillary power to the shields!" and it means something in #FTL <3

We CAN write SF that obeys the laws of physics. Andy Weir (The Martian and others) does it extremely well, but for the most part it does rely on the willing suspension of disbelief. Where would we be without time travel and warp drives? 😁

Bonus question from me to science fiction writers:

I have been watching various videos by renowned physicists detailing in very understandable terms why we haven't and *won't meet aliens, and why interstellar travel isn't possible. I'll link to a couple at the end. My question for you, and for me, is can we write science fiction that abides by the laws of physics?

  12. CW: Review and gameplay/story spoilers - STVOY: Across the Unknown

I will replay #AcrossTheUnknown in "Story Mode", because that's what it's good at.

I will replay #FTL a thousand times more because it is better at so many things.

Do I still have fun playing ATU? Yeah, and its a nice game. But you can tell it's definitely not Daedalic's best work. Not by far.

  13. Also my favorite diagram so far, illustrating what happens when you jump out of the John Hancock Tower (i.e., the version we built out of accelerating ships that has fake gravity):

    #physics #ftl #relativity #scienceed

  14. Part 6
    wrog.dreamwidth.org/72287.html

in which, having established what (little) math we actually need, we get to the truly fun part:

    How constant acceleration works
    a.k.a.
What you need to know re
    Faking Gravity in Special Relativity.

It is **a** **lot** weirder than you would expect.

Light shining up or down gets Doppler-shifted.

Gravity increases as you go downstairs, but you'll live longer.

    There are event horizons.

And one year downstairs is the Infinite-Gravity Horror Show where time comes to a complete stop... or something...

  15. Part 5:
    wrog.dreamwidth.org/71989.html
about how to transform between Moving and Stationary People coordinates (Lorentz transformations) and what velocity angles are (they're like rotation angles, but different)

(trying to make this accessible to folks who haven't seen a whole lot of linear algebra [though, as I recall, I *did* know about matrices in 6th grade;... thought they were cool..)

    #physics #relativity #ftl #scienceed

  16. Am I correct in saying the #starTrek universe has a better explanation/integration of #ftl travel than the #starWars universe?

From what I can see, SW has no clear plotting,
Whereas St we have alpha etc divided by quadrants

Travel from one to the other, etc.

But I don't see much more than à magic trick for light speed in sw

  17. I of course goofed and left out the explanation of Lorentz Contraction from the obvious place in Part 3 where I should have talked about it.

So I've slotted it in here:
    wrog.dreamwidth.org/71271.html
along with a new diagram to make super-clear what's happening.

Or if you want to get the flow/parallelism there's now this link wrog.dreamwidth.org/71271.html
to the earlier time dilation discussion (cleaned up a bit), since that's really the same issue but turned on its side 90°.

So maybe the Stargate SG-1 example will be clearer now. or maybe not
(the point of the blue arrows is this is the kind of shit you can do if you have stargates: A Completely Easy Time Machine they'd have built half-way thru season 2)

    #relativity #physics #ftl #scienceed

  18. Part 4:
    wrog.dreamwidth.org/71432.html

    #physics #relativity #ftl #scienceed

    On the Storrow Drive Theorem

This is on how, having developed how one does spacetime for a 1-dimensional universe, how you put back the 2nd and 3rd spatial dimensions,

and the key question is what happens when you have college students attempting to measure the height of a bridge using rental trucks,

i.e., what differences are there in how the Moving People see it vs. how the Stationary People see it. Do the Moving People see a different height? Or see the truck slanted weirdly? Curiously, the answer to both of these turns out to be NO.

And we have this fun diagram

  19. Part 3:
    wrog.dreamwidth.org/71271.html

…introduce the _Interval_ between two events

    = (Δz, spatial separation)² − (Δt, time lapse)²

and show that this number is an **invariant**, i.e., all slower-than-light observers get the same result calculating this in their own coordinates.

Magic diagram (with ALT text!) below proves this for Moving (upwards) vs. Anti-Moving (downwards, same speed) observers (i.e., using that Intermediate POV from before), and go from there.

    Interval is either
(*) (proper distance)² > 0 [events are simultaneous for somebody],
    (*) −(proper time)² < 0 [events are co-located for somebody], or
    (*) zero [light-speed trajectory]

and then we do Twin Paradox and How FTL Violates Causality.
    #physics #relativity #ftl #scienceed

  20. I also really like how this diagram came out.

It's another spacetime-with-left-to-right-time grid from the stationary observer POV, showing trajectories of
    (*) the stationary observer,
(*) the (velocity v) moving observer, and
    (*) all possible in-between trajectories
    +
how the two observers measure velocities
    +
how the two observers will **not** agree on which trajectory is going v/2
    +
how the One True Intermediate Trajectory
(i.e., the one that both see going the same speed) is between the v/2 trajectories **and** seen by both observers as going **faster** than v/2.

...this being the Big Red Flag that velocities don't add the way you'd think.

(also spelled out more fully in Part 2)

    #physics #relativity #ftl #scienceed

  21. Part 2:
    wrog.dreamwidth.org/71156.html

In some ways, the following diagram is the whole ball of wax, essentially summarizing why the moving observer will *not* agree with stationary observer on simultaneity of events.

It's a spacetime diagram with time going left to right, depicting someone moving upwards (black line), bouncing a light ray off of a reflector above/below them (yellow lines).

If you get what's going on here, why the moving person''s '"snapshot" (blue line) of what's going on Right Now cannot be vertical (i.e., aligned with the stationary person's snapshots), you can derive everything else.

(see the full post for the actual argument)

  22. I decided it was time for another go at explaining Special Relativity.

I remain annoyed at how few people really get it, even amongst avid SF consumers, who have gotten entirely too accustomed to generations of SF writers papering over the FTL issues with technobabble, 'cause we need that galactic empire, don'tcha know.

The idea is to do this with basic geometry you knew or could have learned about in 6th grade plus a bit of algebra (up to Pythagorean Theorem, which I *definitely* remember our math classes teaching in 6th grade).

I think I can get by without using a single square-root sign.

    Anyway, here's part 1:

  25. And we shouldn’t ignore space. Realistically, the #Colonials would have had long-duration research missions, mining expeditions, scout vessels, and deep-space survey ships nowhere near the Colonies on the Day of the Fall. Those crews would eventually return home to ruined worlds—but with intact ships, working #FTL drives, and priceless technical knowledge. 5)

  29. The problem with this subject is that it makes so many unchallenged assumptions, beginning with whether or not it is even worthwhile to conduct manned exploration of #space, given the laws of #Physics. Sadly, a lot of people without a solid foundational education in Physics assume that technology will simply continue to get "better", because our past experiences of #technology have created a steady progression.

But, we are approaching the point with our understanding of the
#universe that we know to a very fine degree how little there is left to know about the universe that we can meaningfully affect, due to the simply nature of the amount of energy it requires to do anything at an #interplanetary, let alone #interstellar scale.

There is no "magic" energy source and there isn't ever going to be a "hyperdrive" or "warp drive" that enables travel at a significant fraction of the speed of light, let alone
#FTL faster than light travel. And even if it were possible to create distortions in #spacetime, we already understand that the energy levels which would be required for that to happen are not attainable by human tools, probably not even if you have deluded yourself into thinking humans will ever be able to build a #sustainable #fusion reactor powerplant, let alone one small enough to outfit a #spacecraft.

Many of the psychological problems that this type of
#research is attempting to solve arise out of the simple fact that the only people who are ever going to be considered for manned space missions are themselves #elites with huge #egos and towering senses of #entitlement engendered by their supposed merit. Such people are inevitably going to create conflict between each other. These are people who are inherently competitive and combative, and putting them into a pressure cooker is guaranteed to cause an explosion, at some point.

Yes, literally a pressure cooker, because that's really what a spacecraft is, in the first place—a pressurized, heated containment vessel.

There are millions, billions of people here on Earth who every single day are facing the very same psychological, technical, and resources challenges that manned exploration of space entails; however, we as a society are spending billions of dollars on novel technologies in an attempt to alleviate these challenges for a minuscule, elite cohort, instead of investing in the proven, non-technological solutions we know would alleviate these conditions for billions of people on Earth.

    Comparing 17th Century terrestrial
#exploration to 21st Century exploration of interplanetary space is comparing apples to oranges. For one thing, we have radios, now, which would make #communications possible even between #Mars and Earth in less than 1 hour, something Henry Hudson couldn't have enjoyed beyond a few miles' radius, at best, in his time. And yet, even though we figured out how to communicate with a spacecraft outside the Solar System some 45 years ago, we still struggle to provide reliable communications to the people of Earth, still today—not because we don't know how, but because we as a society don't believe everyone deserves it.

It's not a technological problem, it's a political problem, caused by psychological problems in the hearts and minds of those who wield social, cultural, political, and economic power right here on Earth.

  34. #Transspace - Project Enclave

By the year 2095, Marla Lays theory was complete and confirmed correct, but the practical implications as well as the potential to change the world was either unknown or mere speculation.

One year later, Lay with her good reputation and massive network could convince seven other leading physicists and three engineers of a two-year project called "Enclave".

Together with 50 other doctoral candidates and technicians, they founded a science think tank in Noordwijk, Netherlands, which provided infrastructure for both theoretical context and practical construction and experimentation.

They kept their discoveries close until the designated end in the year 2098, thus the project title Enclave.

The result was a working, faster than light propulsion model, the so-called Grava drive that could project the first artificial force field and a science paper that was considered the seed of all later inventions.
