  1. It's the third time my account got suspended by reddit for 'suspicious activity'.

I have a feeling it's because I'm using a VPN and Sync for reddit with my own API key, but I'm surprised this only started happening this year.

It's been nearly half a year since I've been using reddit this way, and they only started the suspensions in early February.

Yesterday I got suspended, and today I got suspended again. Fun stuff, guess I won't be interacting with reddit through Sync and see how it goes.

  6. So, #syncForLemmy (aka #syncForReddit but for lemmy) is now available in beta stage. Personally I'm more of a Boost kinda guy so I'm not super interested in it, but I already see people complain about the one-time purchase price. It's 22€. Now, that is indeed high. Some might say very high. But you have to understand that lemmy is niche with a lot (a lot lot) less users than reddit. Meaning the "few" people on lemmy gotta spend more than the many of reddit to end up in a similar profit range.

  9. Sync for Reddit is no more, thanks to Condé Nast taking a page out of the Twitter playbook and charging ridiculous fees for its API.

But Sync is working on an for Lemmy, which is not THE late great Lemmy of Motorhead, but a fediverse alternative to reddit.

  10. @christianselig it's a damn shame how Reddit handled this, even though I use #syncforreddit on Android I feel much what you have said the last month or so had been much in the same vein for that developer.

I'll use Reddit less because of their actions and I'll no longer contribute posts to the platform as will many others. I suspect most regular users won't notice, but for me, well I like to take moral stands.

I'd rather help build something new and better than linger and support bad actors.

  22. The developer of Sync for Reddit is working on Sync for Lemmy, and more information about it can be found at old.reddit.com/r/syncforlemmy. Typical of Reddit, if you try to access the subreddit via the standard site, it’ll try to direct you to use their app instead.

  24. The protest started strong but that time limit was a mistake right from the start and it's gone down hill quite a bit despite the awesome trolls on the start page. Now the 3rd party Reddit client will apparently try to switch to instead of shutting down, if a few more projects go that route the Lemmy app ecosystem could develope far quicker than I ever expected! I think if we want to not only hurt Reddit but also save some of the devs work that's a great strategy!

  29. I don't know if anyone has seen this blog post on Reddit:

    https://www.redditinc.com/blog/investing-in-what-makes-reddit-unique-introducing-contextual-keyword-targeting-and-product-ads

It seems to me that Reddit is trying to heavily pivot to being an advertising platform, like Facebook and Google. It sort of makes sense, even though it seems to be the worst time for such a move (GDPR cookie law, Apple and Google and their "privacy labels", etc)

    If
this is the reason why they are killing off third party apps (now that they've stopped pretending they are), then it makes sense. They want to kill off third party apps to get people using their app so they can harvest data from them and then advertise heavily.

It also makes sense why their mobile website, despite visually being
far better optimised for mobile viewing (unlike old.reddit.com), is so artificially broken and constantly asking users to download their app (if I had to guess, the app is easier to collect data as the native app has more "signals" than the browser version).

It also explains why they are implementing this change so quickly and not allowing third party apps to catch up (Reddit has their own app, they know the rules when it comes to IAP, and they know how difficult they are making these changes to third party app developers).

The big question is why all the drama??

    * Why not just shut off APIs for third party apps, full stop??
Why constantly make it about the Apollo app when it affects all* third party apps like Reddit is Fun, Sync for Reddit, narwhal for iOS etc??
    * Steve Huffman said before that these apps were using significant API resources and they were "inefficient" (implying lots of users use the app). Now he says that 95% of users use the Reddit app. Which is it????
    * Steve Huffman promised better moderation tools in his AMA. Why not deliver the tools now??
    * Why hasn't the official Reddit app improved its accessibility if Reddit wanted to capture a large audience in the first place (for ads and such - Facebook and Google
    hammer accessibility down devs skulls)??
    * Why all the lies?? Why change the story
    all the time???

This whole thing has been a comical shitstorm and could've been avoided had Steve Huffman been honest about the whole situation.

  34. With twitter, well, being twitter and Reddit now deciding to be awful and all the 3rd party clients shutting down, I feel like the last good parts of the 2000s internet are finally being killed off. It makes me quite sad actually.
I hear that Lemmy is the federated "replacement" for Reddit... Is anyone on it and is it any good?
