CW: Accessibility & surveillance state
@aral This is a huge point of confusion for me, as I remember for decades people, especially in the disabled community fought for medical privacy rights, as it'd help prevent discrimination against various groups of disabled people, but now we've a combo of no real rules with significant penalities on violations for keeping online patient medical records private & secure, online patient portals as primary methods for patients/people to get their medical records & lab test results, big tech companies partnering with most sizable medical offices to offer software in theory meant to "help doctors & patients", and as public commons destruction has made in person meetings harder, disabled folks are basically forced to use online networking platforms for support group hosting & related networking.
Maybe if high quality and low out of pocket costs for disabled people was common globally, I'd at least grant a pass to big tech for some of this, especially if they aided in said quality of care, but quality of care is still family fortune related & big tech has continually been a part of the problem set which has only gotten worse!

@Keev The moment Meta tries to steer the ActivityPub standard itself towards commercialization and #SurveilenceCapitalism, I'm going to block their servers and urge everyone, especially large instances, to do the same.

@Samsai I'll admit that I'm no expert on the Soviet Union so I appreciate your correction. I suppose at the very least Soviet Russia and Capitalist Russia would be blocking ProtonMail for very different reasons. Soviets were to defend against Capitalism, whereas Capitalist Russia is doing it to prevent people from evading #SurveilenceCapitalism. Hence why I feel Capitalist Russia is more appropriate for the reversal. As in, in Captialist America, Google searches you.
