A little refinement of my cover for In The Night (Pet Shop Boys / Arthur Baker). As with writing, revisiting music after a break is the best way for me to spot problems more objectively.
Did I mention how I loathe finding the rhythm for offbeat cowbells? It's good when it's done. This isn't done.
A couple of instruments are not Surge; I added Emulator II to the strings, and added the free "DPinga congas" plugin.

I've been playing around with learning electronic #music stuff lately. I've got an #AKAI LPD8 and LPK25 for MIDI controls, and have been messing with #samplv1, #SurgeXT, and #Ardour on #Linux. Also been checking out a lot of theory and instructional videos.
I'm nowhere near being able to make something of note. If anything, I'm only just starting to understand how much I don't understand. But that's OK. That's the info needed to set reasonable goals.

More violin. This time I've applied the new design to my Surge Storm track, so here's the snippet with the violin solo. It also includes my Surge Grand Piano v49.
I'm pleased that the new instrument has tightness and controllability, which lets me throw more virtuoso action into it.
I might try some short snippets of difficult-to-play known pieces, as a further test, which might inform the design a bit more.

I refreshed Surge Storm.
This weekend I was determined to break the creative drought, so I revisted a piece of music that I made in 2022, taking away the limitation of only using one software synth.
If you're into music theory, it has a few 'moments' ;)

I used Surge XT synth, BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover (free) and Arturia Piano V (bundled with my keyboard).

I use #Ardour for producing all my tracks, #Carla for testing and experimenting with plugins, #SurgeXT & #NoiseMaker as synths, various stuff by brummer10 (#guitarix, ratatouille, ...) and #NAM and #Aida for guitars, #LSP plugins for IRs and samplers etc. #x42plugins for EQ and MIDI processing, #Cardinal for sound design & a lot more #FLOSS tools and plugins.
Expanding the scope of the question, I use #FAUST and #DPF for writing my own plugins and use them in a lot of my tracks.

[Edit: lightly updated - and I'm not going to work on this again for a while]
Another push. Some better sounds, arrangement, and production, plus new bits. The bit after this clip will get interesting (with the fade-out), and then I'm done. Not long now.

The right click LFO spawn in bespoke is just sooo much fun 😍

This evening's quick noodle: I murdered Take On Me (instrumental, first few sections).
I found publically available MIDIs to be poor, so I started from nothing.
It's not mixed properly, as I'm just getting the sound design and notes down. I hear lots of other instruments and parts in the remainder of the original, so that'll be fun if I carry on with this one.

Another fairly quick reproduction/cover: the instrumental part of Take My Breath Away.
Yes, I've murdered another Moroder track.
It's quite repetitive, and the vocal 'makes it', so I'm not sure how much I'll develop this one, and I haven't properly mixed/mastered this snippet.
Those are my excuses, but it was fun designing the percussion sounds, and making the instruments.

I like my cello (not a real one - I made a synthesized one). This piece (updated lots) takes the cello for a saunter, playing high at first then in its element around 0:40.
At least I have the sound close to ideal, and I think i know how to drive it. I'm looking forward to using t his in original work!

Souvenir (OMD) - 2024 cover
After few tweaks to sound design and mixing, I can now call this done. I replaced the piano with something more in-keeping, without actually going vocal on it.
It's now all just using Surge XT synth, except for the toms.

My cover of OMD's Souvenir, v1.0.
I designed sounds for my favourite synth (Surge XT), mostly analog-style synthesis, with many effects.

Second, a couple of pipe organ patches that you can use to compose ranks of a large pipe organ.
I've included a demo of Toccata in F, as played in a large cathedral-like building.
It's included in the full download of Surge XT, a free and open source synth plugin.

1/2 Next up: I've updated documentation for two of my Surge XT patches:
Grand Piano is first. It's synthesized and mimics the mechanics of the hammered strings. It's configurable, so you can adjust the sound to your playing style.
It's included in the full download of Surge XT, a free and open source synth plugin.

This evening's content wrangling: I've documented my latest sound [1], which music creators can use for free. It's like a Rhodes piano [2].
I like sound design, and making good instruments and music-making more accessible.

A demo of my Rhodes-alike electric piano, created in Surge XT. This is synthesis, not samples.
Remember how coveted Rhodes pianos were years ago?
This demo is based on a MIDI of "I'm not in Love". originally composed by 10cc.
Sound-designed, (slightly) arranged, and mixed by me. This Noodle is a segment of around 30 seconds, as fair use.

My "Sound Noodles" are snippets of experimental sound design or techniques.
