  1. #SuperBowl pregame singer on "America the Beautiful" got it so wrong. The lyric is "America, America / God shed His grace on thee / and crown thy good with brotherhood..."

She sang "He crowned thy good" instead.

It's not in past tense. It's not describing something that has already happened.

It's in the #subjunctive mood. It describes something that we want to have happen but HASN'T HAPPENED YET. Think of it as "MAY God shed His grace on thee, and MAY He crown thy good with brotherhood..."

The way the song is written reflects the fact that we have a way to go; we have not yet achieved the full measure of God's grace, nor have we shown the brotherhood that we ought to.

The lyrics as sung were smug and self-congratulatory.

("I don't watch the Super Bowl for the game or the ads. I'm here for the #grammar!" is a new take on the event. )

If Jon had been the teacher then he'd almost certainly have explained that it's "were" not "was". 🙂

  3. Every time in the middle of Spanish class I think, “Quinientos millones de personas hablan este idioma, debería poder."

(Yes, we're doing the subjunctive, why do you ask?)
