  1. Disappointing to read #stratechery tie itself into a knot trying to defend the Pentagon. For some reason, Ben thinks that the Pentagon is allowed to dictate material terms but Anthropic isn’t. Even a free market, realpolitik libertarian can see the rational inconsistency.

I don’t care for either team, but let’s not pretend that the Pentagon suffers from any real democratic oversight. From the in-auditable budgets to the banal secrets - voters are provided almost nothing stratechery.com/2026/anthropic

  2. lol @ AI generated images of actual people. That doesn't look like Dario at all.

  3. Just look at the U.S. labs: ...The route of least resistance has simply been to pay Nvidia. DeepSeek, however, just demonstrated that another route is available: heavy optimization can produce remarkable results on weaker hardware and with lower memory bandwidth; simply paying #Nvidia more isn’t the only way to make better models.

  4. Stratechery on Microsoft technology decisions in relation to Crowdstrike:

    """
3rd-party developers could do anything, including “patching the kernel” [..]
    Two of the companies seizing this opportunity in the 2000s were Symantec and McAfee;
    """

I find particularly interesting the way failure modes differ, fail closed vs fail open.

  5. The Great Flattening by Ben Thompson.

Ben makes the case that the Internet and various Apple products, aren't reductive, but rather empowering and positive. Decentralisation is at the core.

I believe this wasn't just Jobs-era marketing but a reality, one I and my family grew up benefiting from. GarageBand!

But, does Apple still believe that today? It seems with every release, my devices can do less with things I own, music, files, etc

  6. """
That accident of history ended up more meaningful to me: while I am most well-known for Stratechery, I am equally proud of the paid newsletter model — services like Substack were based on Stratechery [...]
    """

I had no idea the link was that explicit. Indeed, the linked interview with Substack founder explicitly says they were inspired by Ben Thompson's Stretchery blog.

My take away from this article by Ben Thompson is that

    1) There is no Next Big Thing in technology
    2) This has changed the way Silicon Valley denizens view their economy from an inevitably expanding ecosystem to a Zero Sum Game.

  8. really great #stratechery today, putting the lie to the primary overhiring narrative we're seeing around tech layoffs. Drives home how much commentary on this issue is just people repeating messaging they heard from someplace else stratechery.com/2023/tech-layo

  9. Good run down of gaming, consoles and competition on #stratechery. Good context re: #FTC case against #Microsoft acquisition of #Activision Blizzard. stratechery.com/2022/consoles-

  10. #ChatGPT doesn’t have any internal record of right and wrong, but rather a statistical model about what bits of language go together under different contexts.

  12. I find #stratechery.com so insightful and interesting, that every time I read it again I am surprised I allow myself to miss their posts
