Ran a “Faster, Purple Worm!” game yesterday and it really hit home that I may be too nice of a DM when two of the four level *1* characters managed to escape an encounter with Strahd designed specifically to be a guaranteed TPK.
The monk died falling from the roof of Castle Ravenloft trying to rescue the unconscious warlock and distracting Strahd with taunts about Tatyana while the rogue and sorcerer (the warlock’s step-daughter) escaped the castle and into the mists. The warlock made his death saves but was turned into a vampire spawn by Strahd.
And now I want to start a Ravenloft campaign. Dammit.
