@kd8bxp The company behind Star Fleet Battles does have an RPG, but that's not it. That's their introduction to their tabletop starship combat game.
It's a fun game, even though the rulebook for the full version is legendary for its size and detail!

I am serious about playing Star Fleet Battles. Apparently Amarillo Design Bureau produces the game now. Anyone know anything about them?

board game facts:
The science fiction war game #StarFleetBattles lets each side have up to twelve spaceships in a battle! This limitation is fascinating, because the game is unplayable with just two ships. -
Check out the company's (ADB) website here:

They make Star Fleet Battles, the old school, pencil and paper starship combat game with a massive rulebook.
They make Federation Commander, which is Star Fleet Battles redesigned for a faster play experience, a bit more modern. Still lots of fun and easier to get into for most people.
They make Federation and Empire, the monster strategic game of the Star Fleet Universe.
They also adapted their starship combat game to other rulesets, like A Call to Arms, and Starmada. They make some role playing games, and other stuff.

Star Fleet Battles scenario Pleiades Turkey Shoot.
This shows the action of Turn 1. The Klingon ZY fighters closed to begin the attack on the lone Destroyer Escort, but the Federation F14 fighters launched 2 dozen multi-warhead drones that broke up the attack run. Most Klingon fighters aborted and turned off to save themselves, the 6 that didn't were destroyed while dealing only some shield damage to the DE.
The A10s closed to range 8 or 9 from the Klingon F5, which accelerated to speed 30 and also turned off. Realizing they weren't getting closer this turn, the A10s launch 12 photon torpedoes, hitting with 7 of them (above average for this range), gutting the F5. The A10s also launched 12 drones to finish the job, but the F5 deployed a Transporter Bomb with it's last surviving transporter to save itself destroying those 12 drones.
Just a few more impulses to finish out the turn, and the Klingons get to roll for another reinforcement group. The F14s have to decide whether to launch more multi-warhead drones (they have a special firing rate that allows them to launch all 4 of their multi-warhead drones in a turn instead of the one or two drone limit), or wait until next turn.
I had worried that this scenario would be too tedious to play with so many fighters and drones, and it is a bit. But it is also a lot of fun so far, enough to justify all the counters. The first batch of multi-warhead drones released 72 dogfight drone sub-munitions in one impulse, and that was only half of what the F14s could have launched.

I haven't played Star Fleet Battles in a while. I had been going through the Historical Scenarios, the last one being The WYN and the Lion, the Lyran invasion of the WYN Cluster. That game saw the decisive defeat of the invading Lyrans.
Up next is The Pleiades Turkey Shoot. The Klingons have located the last Federation Heavy Carrier group based on the CVA Zhukov. They launch a swarm of fighters, gunboats, and a few frigates to try to destroy the CVA with just expendable attrition units to gain a better negotiating position to end the war on.
The Federation Admiral decides to wager the war on this one battle and meet the Klingon attack head on, ordering all ships to maintain slow speed and destroy all attackers.
The Federation sets up the CVA and its escorts, and an Escort Carrier and its escort. Fighters (the CVA's excellent F14s and Photon Torpedo armed A10s, and F18s from the FFV) deployed at start. There are also two SWAC (Space Warning and Control) Shuttles, and two Multi-Role Shuttles.
The Klingons can potentially get up to 3 Frigates, 3 Gunboat Flotillas (6 Gunboats each), 2 squadrons of top end ZY-C fighters, 3 squadrons of mid range ZV fighters, a squadron of older Z1 assault fighters, a squadron of older Z2 fighters, and a half-squadron of ZD disruptor armed fighters.
On turn 1 they roll for three groups and got an F5 and both squadrons of ZY-Cs, their best fighters. At the start of each later turn they get to roll for 1 additional group. Some turns they may get nothing additional, depending on the roll.
The Klingons earn points for damaging/destroying the CVA Zhukov and it's 3 escorts, the ECL and both DEs. All other units are expendable.

This one made me smile. A game played long ago but saved with some old papers.
Somewhere out there some retired Federation Captain is telling lies how he survived an encounter with the Klingon Empire 30+ years ago. No doubt due to some Vulcan trick 🖖.

Does the board game #StarFleetBattles still take new race suggestions?
I've got an idea for a space empire of intelligent yeast who battle for control of the stars with a fleet of deadly Breadnoughts.
The Yeestians' main weapons are plasma torpedoes of the "D" and "F" types (standing for "dough" and "fermentation"). Each Breadnought has trillions of crew, and when they have to fight on ground they put one Yeestian in a giant robot, but the giant robot is like... just dog sized.

Something I posted on a #StarFleetBattles board in response to another post (on litterboxes for Kzin and Lyran ships). I am inordinately proud of this bit of extemporanea.
Do people use those rules? I thought they ignored them, like the rule any Legendary Federation Officer is a Vulcan on 1-, and, if so, at the start of each turn, you must roll 2 dice and on a result of 2, they enter Pon Farr and are treated as a normal officer, unless a legendary doctor treats them, which destroys one lab square and has a 7- chance of working per such destroyed square, with a 16-impulse time requirement. (Way back in Expansion 1, there were also rules by which a Legendary Captain could duel the afflicted, but they were dropped in later editions.)
The one time we used them,we got into a big argument over if the ‘treatment’ option applied when the Legendary Doctor *was* the Vulcan.

Trump does not play 4-D #StarFleetBattles (using #AdvancedSquadLeader for boarding actions.) He plays monochrome Candyland. Against himself. And cheats. And still loses.
