Brian Johnson (1939-2026)

Foi anunciada a morte, aos 87 anos, do designer e diretor de efeitos visuais Brian Johnson (na foto em destaque). Tendo iniciado sua carreira no final dos anos 1950, na década seguinte ele passou a trabalhar com o lendário produtor Gerry Anderson, inicialmente como assistente de Derek Meddings e depois como diretor de segunda unidade em séries de marionete clássicas como Supercarro, Fireball XL5, Stingray e Thunderbirds. Após um hiato que inclui trabalhos cinematográficos como o clássico 2001: Uma Odisseia no Espaço, Johnson retornou à produtora de Anderson Century 21, onde criou os icônicos modelos de naves espaciais da série Espaço: 1999. A partir da década de 1970 ele participou na criação de efeitos visuais de outros filmes memoráveis de ficção científica, inclusive conquistando o Oscar por Alien – O Oitavo Passageiro e Star Wars Episódio V: O Império Contra-Ataca. Outros créditos de Johnson no cinema incluem Quando os Dinossauros Dominavam a Terra, O Dragão e o Feiticeiro, A História Sem Fim e Coração de Dragão.

The amount of model work in this series is amazing. And it seems like the writing does pick up a little in the 2nd season (I'm just on the 2nd episode, though).

Joan Collins appeared on this as well as Star Trek. Took me awhile to recognize her, but her voice and line delivery are distinctive.

As a rule of thumb, it bodes ill when the word "brain" appears in an SF series title. 🤨

One thing I'm noticing in #Space1999 is a degree of batching of plots and effects: they get a theme and then do two or three episodes based on it together. And once they figure out a way to do certain shots, they reuse it.

The understanding of physics continues to be hilariously bad: "not even wrong" (because it doesn't make enough sense to rise to the level of mere wrongness).

Their effects and stunts have improved by episode 15 or so. I get the impression that a lot of the plots are just excuses to set these up.

With "The Full Circle", we are tackling the classic "cavemen vs astronauts" debate. And frankly, the cavemen are winning, because the astronauts are woefully unprepared for very predictable problems.
