  1. I just confirmed that my provincial government - Saskatchewan - is still using a piece of software that a colleague and I at a long-out-of-business company obtained from another government (it was developed in-house there) and extensively customized for them... 25 years ago.

It's in use all over the "new" overall Government website. They've put some shiny new CSS on it when integrating it into other pages, but the source still shows what the backend is doing.

    (a) this is funny, in a blast-from-the-past way.

    (b) this is also an illustration that software, properly designed and implemented, doesn't need constant churn just to "keep up". It doesn't need to be rewritten from scratch every 3 years because the developers or management has CADT syndrome. It doesn't need to be "updated" to give it a new "framework" because ooh, shiny shiny. It doesn't need to be lifted and shifted to "the cloud". It doesn't need to be backed by Google or Amazon or Oracle or anyone else.

It's Perl, a database, and a webserver, on Linux. And it Just Works.
