My headphones (Siberia SteelSeries 840) suddenly decided to only work on the left channel on my MBP.
Cue paranoia that they were broken, dispelled when they worked fine on my PC.
Head-scratching ensued, until I discovered the Audio MIDI Setup app (in Utilities).
Counter-intuitively this app lets you configure input/output channels for non-MIDI audio devices.
I managed to switch the offending phones back to stereo.
No idea what changed them to mono in the first place 🤯

Oh bollocks! I just accidentally updated to whatever version of #MacOS is the #liquidAss version on my Macbook: The feckers somehow tricked me just like they did on my phone.
Setting 'Display contrast' works well, doesn't it? Those toggle switches are soooo much easier to see. 🤦♂️ (Photo, as a screen grab doesn't actually show the bleached out effect).

Turns out for unknown reasons password and FileVault encryption key get misaligned. This documentation piece is pure gold: kextcache.com/filevault-login-issue-fix/
Thanks to Ayush Chaudhary for writing it down. BUT even after decrypting the mac, resetting passphrase and doing the dance around AppleID and a ton of other shenanigans after changing such a core feature on a mac, after re-enabling #FileVault2 I am again at step 0: locked out of the mac.
Oh #Apple, what has happened to your software quality?!
Sure unsupported mac and OCLP means HereBeDragons. So now I am wondering, should I continue running that mac without FileVault2 or just put Linux Mint on it.
Sadly I have some pro hardware that is not supported on linux.

I write a long response to a 3 star review to help clarify a concern then had. I submit in and it's pending Apple's review. I notice an error so I click "edit review", make a change and save. Now the reply is gone, nothing pending, just gone.

And Books app in iOS / iPadOS still is not able to display a pdf file in dark mode. I am so glad Zotero exists on iOS so I don't have to put up with the lacking UI systems Apple comes up in their own apps.
Still waiting for the speech feature for the Zotero reader on iOS though.

After 3 hours of my Saturday morning and an overnight restore, my phone is fully functional. It only took 18 hours from delivery to switch devices #itjustworks #apple

Oh and the update broke my Spotlight index again (not that it takes an update to break Spotlight, it can just like, randomly break down every other month on its own!). Deleted all indexes, reset indexing and it's now building a new index for like 6 hours already.
Fun fact: I've disabled "Document" indexing in the Spotlight preferences (because of suspicions that this takes longest). Even though the index isn't yet done, it's already finding Documents when I type in a query. But not applications.

Modern macOS is just sooooo great: The long press feature to get to letters like ä with a US layout craps out randomly now. Sometimes a reboot helps, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it comes back on its own. But of course it's a feature designed for multilingual people and we know those don't exist in California, so, you know, no one tests that shit. ffs.
Luckily I use emacs which has toggle-input-mode. I'm pre-writing every message in a scratch-buffer now. 😅

Second time this week that #macOS #Spotlight forgets installed programs. Here goes deleting its index and rebuilding it again.

Adventures in Mac Ownership:
Your device may randomly decide it doesn't have its own hostname any more because the mDNS utilities did a stupid. Because their implementation of Bonjour manages to forget that *it* is the computer with that name, sees that name because of reflected traffic or otherwise receiving it, and determines that another device on the network has that name.
This has been a bug since... 11 years ago, and it just has never been fixed.

Why does Apple's Voice Memos app need to suck so much? Many iOS versions ago, it automatically named my recordings with the date-time. When that was removed, I wrote a script to relabel my recordings using File Creation date. That now doesn't work, as when I share with my Mac, the file creation date becomes the date I shared it. Why? Thankfully, the recording date-time is still stored in the "Create Date" field accessible in the Terminal via exiftools. Sigh. So stupid!

They haven't worked very well for me in a long time but this empty menu is new. #ItJustWorks
Update: 🤔 Well a restart (macOS 15.3.2 update) repopulated the menu my my iPad tabs but not my iPhone tabs.
