Melting glass beads onto fired clay is one of my favorite techniques. Until Tuesday I was sticking them on with white glue and firing them horizontally, which is necessary because the glue burns off long before the glass melts. I did the first five columns of this one at a time, propping the mug up in the kiln so that the column was horizontal.

But then on Monday I bought some sodium silicate at the ceramics store. It's a very high temperature liquid glass to glass adhesive (among other things). I used it to stick on all the rest of the beads plus some fancy stuff on the handle, and this is the result!

The only drawback is that it doesn't fire into the glaze at glass melting temperatures and leaves a kind of hard clear scum that's fired enough to be irremovable. At first I was painting a stripe of sodium silicate and placing the beads onto it because that's how I did the white glue, but it's noticable after firing (although I couldn't get a picture which shows it) then I learned to dip each bead into the sodium silicate and stick it on so that it all stays under the bead, which works great!
