  2. Reminder: All these proposed "internet safety" measures (under 14/15/16 social media bans, age verification, client side scanning, OSA copycat laws, etc.) are ineffective, if not outright counterproductive at protecting minors and the public at large.

The true purpose of these measures are follows:

    For Governments:

-Ensure that things like Arab Spring, the 2020 George Floyd Protests, and the surge in Pro-Palestine sentiment can never happen again.
-Censor evidence of war crimes and corruption.
-Get rid of anything they personally find weird/icky (furries, LGBTQ+ community, voting rights resources, mental/reproductive health resources, etc.)

For Corporations (Meta, OpenAI, AAA gaming publishers, etc.):

-These giant companies know they are rotten to the core. But rather then introspect and improve, they want to ensure they're the only game in town (or at least ensure everyone else dies with them).
-Profit from selling even more personal data

Call your region appropriate representatives! Sign petitions! Participate in protests! Let governments and corporations know we don't want any of this!

TITLE: Opinion: Social media bans are passing around the world. How will we know if they help teens?

    URL: statnews.com/2026/09/22/social

In December 2025, as social media’s potential impact on youth mental health faced growing scrutiny, Australia became the first country to ban social media for people under 16, with Indonesia quickly following. The European Union is taking a slightly different approach, banning social media for children under 13 and personal accounts for people under 15 after pressure from several E.U. nations.

Elsewhere, big tech companies are being challenged in the courts. Meta recently agreed to pay up to $18 billion to resolve claims in the U.S. that Facebook and Instagram harmed children. Meta will also introduce “safety by design” features for young people, such as concealing the number of “likes” on posts. But will these features meaningfully change young people’s behavior or experiences online? Will the bans have their intended effect?

  6. Taylor Lorenz on the global effort to ban kids from social media – Stateside with Kai and Carter
By Hosted by Carter Sherman , produced by Anabel Bacon , engineered by Ivan Kuraev , executive producer Jonathan Menjivar

What are we going to do about kids and social media? Lawsuit after lawsuit has accused the biggest social media platforms in the US of designing their products to be addictive and of endangering children. Meta recently settled one of those lawsuits, agreeing to pay up to $17.1bn in penalties and to limit how kids use its platforms, like Instagram and Facebook. (They did not admit to any wrongdoing.) The rest of the world is embracing a different solution that tech journalist Taylor Lorenz tells Carter Sherman would forever change the way we use the internet: social media bans. Last year, Australia became the first country to ban people under 16 from social media, and this week, the European Union is expected to propose a similar ban. If it goes into effect, the EU ban would be, by far, the world’s biggest effort to block kids from social media. But, as Lorenz points out, these laws raise all kinds of questions about civil liberties, data privacy, and the future of free speech on the internet.

  12. @ChrisMayLA6
I still think the onus ought to be on the platforms themselves and not on ‘bans’.

Either a platform is kid friendly (that is with rigorous mediation of posts and enforcement of rules and conduct — for which they would be totally responsible)

    OR

A platform is not kid friendly and will ‘vet’ new members in any way they deem appropriate and be solely responsible if kid under a certain age get access to the platform.

Period. No other way is near equitable. It’s their product, they should fess up. Govt(s) timidity is what gives us ‘bans’; low hanging fruit and bugger the consequences on privacy and private information monetisation seems to be the rule. Plus, censorship bans are never water tight and kids are tech savvy (unlike our polies).

  22. Kids effected by social media ban, consume less news. Which leads to less civic engagement.

"reported a 51 per cent drop in news consumption, according to Western Sydney University paper published in May.

“There is a very, very strong association between news engagement and civic engagement,” said Dr Tanya Notley, the paper’s lead author. “Taking away news will have a direct impact on that.”
