    'Smart' motorways aren't. Close to J16 on the M1 this afternoon, a truck was stopped with hazards flashing. in front of him a woman was getting out of a stationary car. No warnings and very scary. These smart lanes need to go back to being hard shoulders.

    When drivers and the media say "#SmartMotorways", they almost always mean the ones with "all-lane running", or ALR, i.e. converting the hard shoulder into a running lane permanently to widen them on the cheap. Every "smart motorway" project that was planned or under construction featured ALR.

    Sunak thinks by scrapping the hated ALR before the local elections he can claw back some votes.

    Slight problem: the hated ALR was introduced in 2014… by the Tories. #UKPolitics
