‘This is dangerous’: #SlimeMoulds and the bitter debate over the nature of #intelligence | | The Guardian
"The way she described [slime mould path optimization] put me in mind of large language models [ #llm ] and their techniques of brute pattern-matching – an incomplete simulation of human thought that is described increasingly as intelligence."
Yes! So, yes!!!
Slime Moulds as Nature's large language models! *cackling on sooo many levels* -
The best time to find slime molds is in the summer after heavy rain. Well, that’s exactly what we have had at the house… or should I say, ON the house??
Slime molds have 2 stages: plasmodial and fruiting. In the first, they are capable of movement. They can climb things. In the second, they can have very cool shaped bodies as they prepare to release their spores.
This one climbed the wooden siding of my house. 😳

🥴 Oh, the BBC has found the *real* hidden wonder of the universe: slime moulds. 📸 Because apparently, photographing microscopic blobs of goo is the pinnacle of cultural achievement now. 🍄 Who knew the next big thing in art would be... gelatinous fungi? 🙄

Slime moulds
Overlooked and underestimated. Utilises macrophotography. This 3mm tall Lamproderma gracile is one of 175 species of slime mould found on a 1km forest track, which shows just how common they are. Classified as Amoebozoans, the three life stages of slime moulds – amoeba, plasmodium and spore-bearing fruiting body – perform important roles.Photograph: Sarah Lloyd

Found this Lycogala flavofuscum slime mold just as it was beginning to fully harden. Kind of a cool color and texture. (Especially since it started out a smooth cotton candy pink color.)

72 hours in the life of a slime mold.
This week I discovered a slime mold taking over an old stump behind the house. Over the next 3 days I took a picture of it at the same time of day. Notice the section that grasped the twig - how it then didn’t proceed like the remainder of the mass. Once slime molds leave the plasmodium stage and enter the fruiting stage, the change is FAST.
