The magnificent collection of medieval graveslabs and early Christian cross slabs on view in Kilmory Knap Chapel, in a remote corner of Argyll. Roughly D-shaped, it would have served as a fortified farmstead when first built, the better part of two thousand years ago. In 1308 King Robert the Bruce held what is said to have been the last Scottish Parliament conducted in Gaelic here during a military expedition. If you know this as "Castle Aaaaargh" then you'll be a Monty Python fan, otherwise it's usually known simply as Castle Stalker. It is a 14th-century Scottish tower house situated on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, just a wee way up the road from us here at Four Oaks. Tours of the castle usually book up quickly but we were lucky enough to get a last minute cancellation.

Fingal's Dog Rock, Dunollie, Oban.
A long, long time ago, two giants - Finn McCool and Fingal - fought over territory between Ireland and Scotland. There are several legends about their battles; but Fingal used to tie his dog to this sea stack to await his return. The dog, leaping and pulling on the huge iron chain used to restrain it, wore away the lower part of the rock.

Carnasserie Castle, one of the more recent historical attractions in the amazing Kilmartin Glen in Argyll.
