@jloc0 Time for an install again. I saw @nwgpiotr updating his things for the new Hypr also. My first ever wm was awesomewm, for which I had a great config (at least I thought so!). So going back to Hypr for a while and getting my feet wet in lua configs is full circle after 8 years 😆

You know what's nice? Terminals like kitty or alacritty, that work on both x11 and wayland. Makes for a more streamlined setup if you're using both. So, kudos to @jloc0 and his slackeroni repo, alacritty is in there (bcs of niri) as a ready to use package and has now been deployed by me on both Mate and Hyprland. I can tell you compiling it yourself is a dependency hell. Cool stuff 😎

That plan to move all to Slackware, except for one or two test setups, is finally happening. Saves me a ton in updating as well, with specific updates landing on the NAS.

One KDE 6 laptop, one nwg-hyprland/niri/river nvme and one Mate desktop nvme (thanks OTB aka Steve Anelay for introducing me to Slackware and so much more!)On a roll, all on kernel 6.16 et all.

One N150 with Gentoo and dwm won't go anywhere, although I will put dwm on Slackware as well.

Leaves the old NUC for Garuda Mokka or FreeBSD experiments 🥳

That took exactly two weeks and a bit.

Your laptop shouldn't be just a workhorse, it is an expression of you, used for work as well.

Hence my install of Slackware KDE on it, it was by far the best I used for the past year or so.

With a ThinkPad X13 gen 1 liveslaks turned out to be a bit of a challenge, but conferring with @jloc0 in the background eventually fixed it.
Afaik strictly only with this laptop, never had it before. Solved by Ventoy.

Now I gotta deal with two slacker0ni installs (kde and nwg-shell, running 4 wm's) 🤪🥳 thnx Jay!

There is a slackbuild for RiverWM, but it's very old. Grabbed the rpm from Fedora y'day and added River to my Slackware-nwg setup. Niri, river, hyprland and sway. For my panels to behave correctly I use nwg-panel (with niri-tasks) on Niri and Waybar on River. Nwg-panel with the hyprland config on Hyprland. Now I'm merging the applications, so keybinds relate to the same applications across the board.

Changed all flatpaks back to sourced versions. Librewolf, Brave, Vlc, Joplin, Libreoffice, Deluge. The last two with entirely different applications (Softmaker & Tixati).

This is what Niri does to you 😂 And I'm very much okay with it.

So anyone telling you Slackware hardly seems up to date these days:

With another Slacker0ni production I've now got Slackware Current, Niri 25.05.1, kernel 6.15.7 and all ye goodies, like nwg-panel. waybar, fuzzel, nwg-drawer, azote etc. up and running.

You have to finish on a high.

After one year of Slackware KDE it is time to refresh the muscle memory.

My main distro for the coming year will be Slackware Hyprland (and Niri), with the great nwg-shell on top. A combo I'm very familiar with and which is another excellent Slackeroni production!

KDE will be out of the picture as a daily driver for the first time in 5 years, with Slackware hyprland, VoidLinux and riverwm and Gentoo with dwm all nerd needs are covered.

Accidents will happen.

So I decided after the car crash to setup a, what I call, hybrid system: Slackware KDE, by @jloc0 , remove some things, install grub and decide to do all applications by flatpak. Except for those KDE apps obviously.

It's probably relief setting in, but it sure feels fresh and snappy again!

Re: Niri WM
So yes:
- You can open applications on specific workspaces and switch focus there immediately
- Not only dynamic, but also 'declared' workspaces are possible (I've got my 9 easily set up)
- There is a one-stop config file that's human readable
- The wiki will have some quirks probably, but in general very clear and quite extensive already
- My favorite tool: 'niri validate', super simple double-check if your config will work
- Will bring my config to FreeBSD tomorrow (Niri is already in the Ports); had it up and running on Slackeroni NWG today.

Most important (as @BrodieOnLinux also said in his video): haven't had that much fun in a window-manager for a long time.

Order has been restored. Slackeroni nwg found it's place on the N150. Couldn't live without it. All in all nwg-shell has been running on various setups of me for around 8 months now. The Slackware version rocks.

Okay, okay, I'm the ✂️ man. Want all my installs as lean as possible. Cut out cruft. Then build up, with only what I want.

But it is very convenient Slackware dumps a lot in there already. Connecting to a Samba share (the NAS) has never been that easy.
Compiling software with Slackbuilds is a no-brainer; all required libs are already installed.

On the 10th of July I'll be running Slackeroni KDE for one year. The best KDE out there (and I've used them all).

I'm seriously considering turning the other 3 setups into Slackware and be done with it. It's that good.

Bar one, for all ye geekie testing and dorkiness. And I still sheared away a lot 👻
