"Shenzhen’s rise from mud is impressive, but the city was not planned for human scale. It took 50 minutes by car to get anywhere. We were routinely befuddled by how to walk from the Luohu subway station to our hotel: they were purportedly across the street, but due to the multi-lane road separating the buildings, the hotel was only accessible by navigating a looping maze of under- and over-passes. (For some reason, Chinese really dislike walking—I was shocked by how often people would squeeze into jam-packed escalator lines rather than saunter down an empty flight of stairs.)
There are some strollable bits: skyscrapers and night markets here, an urban hike up to a Deng statue there. I did appreciate the famed electronics market Huaqiangbei, where you can purchase anything from off-brand iPhones to factory cables. (Pro tip: The real discounts are in the tiny stalls a few floors up, and you can always barter on bulk buys. “The ground floor is for chumps,” Afra told me.)
But the state’s shadow is never far. In the stairwells of Huaqiangbei, in malls and in industrial parks, you’d see riot gear—shields and batons—propped against walls, ready to stop a phantom protest at any moment. It’s unclear if these materials—identical in every location and every city we visited—were actually meant to be used (you’d think that theoretical rioters could grab them as easily as police). Instead, they served as an ever-visible reminder that you were never far from the full force of the state."

Statistics on #electric vehicle use per country [1] are one thing, but first-hand experience is quite another!
Comparing #HongKong and closeby #Shenzen recently, the difference is stark!
HKG has excellent public transport, but streets are narrow and full of loud and smelly buses (alongside many cars).
Shenzen has lots of traffic as well, but streets are wider and all scooters, all buses, and most cars are electric. The result: a very quiet environment.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has overseen a surge in Chinese nationalism to boost his government’s popularity as tensions have frayed with rivals, but the murder of a Japanese boy is exposing the dangers of such a tactic. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/09/20/asia-pacific/society/xi-nationalism-tactic-japanese-boy/ #asiapacific #society #chinajapanrelations #xijinping #stabbing #shenzen

The latest Fountain Pen video is now available for your viewing pleasure.
In this video I am comparing the old and new Tomoe River papers.
I compare both the 52gsm and the 68gsm papers,
I then tested them all using a number of different fountain pens and inks.

#China #Imperialism #Shenzen #Colonialism: "For years, the notion of an ideological struggle between the U.S. and China was dismissed; China is capitalist, they said. Just look at the Louis Vuitton bags. This misses a central truth of the economy of the 21st century. The means of production now are internet servers, which are used for digital communication, for data farms and blockchain, for AI and telehealth. Capitalists control the means of production in the United States, but the state controls the means of production in China. In the U.S. and countries that implicitly accept its tech dominance, private businesspeople dictate the rules of the internet, often to the displeasure of elected politicians who accuse them of rigging elections, fueling inequality or colluding with communists. The difference with China, in which the state has maintained clear regulatory control over the internet since the early days, couldn’t be clearer.
The capitalist system pursues frontier technologies and profits, but companies like Huawei pursue scalability to the forgotten people of the world. For better or worse, it’s San Francisco or Shenzhen. For many countries in the Global South, the model of development exemplified by Shenzhen seems more plausible and attainable. Nobody thinks they can replicate Silicon Valley, but many seem to think they can replicate Chinese infrastructure-driven middle-class consumerism."

@debihope @BlackAzizAnansi I bought a Kickstarter #Mask in 2020 that shines UV light on the air as it goes in the mask, but not for long enough to kill #Covid. If the UV LED was outside the mask, it would do a better job of disinfecting the air, but then it would burn or blind me - it uses 254nm UVC light, the same kind tanning beds use.
What I really want is a mask or a headlamp with the new #222nm LEDs. 222nm UVC light kills Covid in minutes, but can't burn skin or eyes like 254nm.
@SexyCyborg is a #maker in #Shenzen who built a personal 222nm projector: http://tny.wtf/Y Naomi is a great person to follow for her insight on fighting Covid.
Unfortunately, 222nm lights cost $$$ everywhere that isn't Shenzen. In the US I can get a 20w 254nm bulb for $20, but a 20w 222nm light is $1000-$2000.
If the US took disinfection seriously, we could jumpstart a 222nm industry and put them in light fixtures everywhere for cheap, but we don't take much about Covid seriously.
