Seattle Police speed with regularity, even when not responding to calls.

CW: Seattle Politics, Police
This lawsuit never should have been brought. I'm glad it's finally over. Cops have to have thick skin. Too many don't.

Adrian Diaz was the wrong person to lead Seattle PD. He might've been personally a "good guy" but he was going to lead as "one of the boys".

CW: Police chases, emergency vehicle operation
Medic One drives the speed limit for safety. Every time they went to my grandfather's because of a heart attack, they did not drive 74 MPH. Every time they took him to the hospital they did not drive 74 MPH.

CW: Policing, Seattle, toxic masculinity
There's a culture problem at Seattle PD, but there's also a leadership problem.

A Seattle police union leader Daniel Auderer laughed when told 23-year-old graduate student Jaahnavi Kandula, who was hit by a cop speeding to a scene, was dead. Then Auderer called her life of "limited value" and repeatedly laughed throughout a conversation he had about the incident. I feel ill after reading this. This man never should have passed the psych exam. (Of course, also true of many cops on duty.)

CW: Cops murdering people, Seattle
Cops are investigating a cop who, during his investigation of another cop who had hit a pedestrian while going *74mph* in a 25mph zone, said, "She was 26 anyway. She had limited value." At this point, they didn't even know whether the victim would survive or not.
There is no reforming an occupying force that sees the public who pays their lavish salaries and perks as disposable trash without value.

Judge Robart's order says this:
"SPD shall provide a report to the court no later than December 15, 2023, on the status of implementation of RCW 10.114.011 and RCW 43.102.020, regarding investigations of the use of deadly force. This report shall include an explanation of how this legislation affects SPD’s Force Investigation Team (see Consent Decree ¶¶ 112-18)."
So it looks like no independent investigations until Robart is crystal clear on what specifically will change in SPD's case under the law.

Here's a copy of Judge Robart's order, for those who like to read such things. I haven't read it just yet.

If Judge Robart is releasing SPD from oversight for everything except crowd control and officer accountability, does that mean that I-976 finally applies to SPD?
Remember, state law exempted SPD from I-976, which requires independent investigations in the use of deadly force, because Seattle was under the consent decree. So Seattle PD kept investigating themselves when they killed people.

Re: immediately previous boost of a Seattle Bike Blog post about Seattle PD's use of bikes.
Here's a link to the original story in CrossCut. As someone who is both an urbanist and documented how Seattle's Office of Police Accountability handled complaints during the 2020 protests, I'm going to dig into the OPA recommendations and see what prompted them. So watch for a bit more commentary from me maybe this weekend. In the meantime, I'm glad the OPA is raising the issue, even if in their normal tame way.

Oakland commissioned an outside investigation into several very deficient IAD investigations into one officer. The Chief of Police is now on leave.
Posting here from my Seattle account because I'll bet the sort of thing uncovered here is 99% certain to be happening at OPA and with Seattle's Chief of Police.

Ugggggh apparently I'm still jumpy when there's a loud neighborhood noise even weeks after the #SeattlePD's violent (and noisy) suppression of protestors, the fireworks, and the gun violence in and around #CHOP.
How long until that kind of anxiety and fear stuff wears off?
