The #SantaBarbaraCounty Board of Supervisors took the first step of what promises to be a protracted and historic pivot to pull the plug on all onshore oil development anywhere in Santa Barbara County.
This Tuesday, the supervisors narrowly approved
— by a 3-2 vote —
⭐️a ban on any new onshore oil drilling. 

The last time a new drilling proposal was approved took place in 2014. 
Since all onshore oil production takes place in North County, the vote predictably followed the board’s traditional north-south split.

This week’s vote was strategically tailored to ban only new drilling proposals,
but in meetings over the past two years, the board majority had clearly indicated its intentions stop all existing onshore oil operations in the years to come as well. 

To inoculate itself against inevitable litigation claiming an illegal, unconstitutional, and uncompensated “taking,”
the board majority is hoping to stretch this closure of what has been one of the county’s foundational industries over a long period of time.

How long this process
— known as “amortization”
— will take has yet to be determined.
The supervisors were told Tuesday that it will take three years to determine how long this amortization process would be.
An environmental impact report would have to be prepared and fought over. 

This Tuesday’s hearing was held in Santa Maria, and no fewer than 53 people signed up to speak for or against the proposal.

"The next two days (Today and Thu) will feature very dangerous and unusual heat. High pressure over AZ will bring 596 dam hgts to Srn CA today and 595 dam hgts Thu. SFC high pressure to the NE will bring 2-3 mb of offshore flow this morning both from the N and E. This one two punch will bring 3 to 6 locally 8 degrees of warming to areas south of Pt Conception and a whopping 10 to 15 degrees north. This will lead to max temps of mid to upper 80s at the beaches, 90s across the rest of the csts and 100 to 108 degree temps for the vlys. The big kicker for this two day event will be the humidity which will be much higher than normal due to the remnants of Hurricane Marine and the much warmer than normal sea sfc temps. This extra humidity will make the temps feel much worse and will lessen the bodies cooling abilities. This humidity as well as the strong inversion will also lead to much warmer than normal overnight lows which will make heat recovery difficult for people without Air Conditioning.

Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect today and Thursday. The added
humidity really make this heat event much more dangerous than previous ones. All residents should limit your outdoor activities during the afternoon, seek air conditioned spaces, and take lots of breaks."

On Wednesday additional Heat Advisories go into effect for the Ventura County coasts and
valleys, the Santa Clarita Valley, and all of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties and are valid through Thursday evening....The Central Coast will not be immune from this event as offshore flow on Wednesday will drive some temperatures all the way to 100
to 102 degrees and most areas will end up 20 degrees or more above normal."

"High Temperature Precautions and Tips to Stay Cool:

Drink plenty of cool, non-alcoholic beverages, especially those without sugar or caffeine. Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink. If you have fluid restrictions from your doctor, ask to see how much you should drink while the weather is hot.

Avoid hazardous activities that may cause sparks and start a wildfire, such as using lawn care equipment and towing with dragging chains along roadways.

Take care of those who might not be aware of high temperature dangers or be able to react accordingly – especially the elderly, young children, and pets. Check on your neighbors.

Limit outdoor activity. Try to schedule outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day, like morning and evening hours. Be sure to wear sunscreen and rest often.

For those who work outside, be sure to take frequent rest breaks in a shaded area or air-conditioned room, if possible. Stay hydrated and take action by moving to a cooler space if you feel signs of heat exhaustion.

Take regular breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned room. A few hours in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler. Taking a cool shower or bath can help too.

If you do not have air‐conditioning, consider arranging to spend at least parts of the day at another space that is cool. Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, they will not prevent heat-related illness.

Wear appropriate clothing. Lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing works best.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion. If someone becomes dizzy, nauseated, or sweats heavily, find a cooler location for him or her immediately.

Know the signs of heat stroke. Heat stroke is much more serious than heat exhaustion. The symptoms are similar to heat exhaustion, but also include hot, flushed skin. With heat stroke, the person often stops sweating and the skin will be unusually dry. If heat stroke is a possibility, call 911 immediately. Heat stroke is life threatening!

Do not leave children (and pets) unattended in vehicles. It only takes a matter of minutes on a relatively mild day for a vehicle to reach deadly temperatures.

Southern California Edison (SCE) has notified customers that it is considering a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in parts of Santa Barbara County due to an increased risk for wildfires. This outage may begin as soon as Tuesday, August 25, though it may occur earlier or later depending on actual weather conditions. If you live or work in or near the potentially PSPS impacted area, you should make preparations for a possible multiple day power outage.

A Heat Advisory is in effect now through 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2026.
An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 25 through 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 28 for the Cuyama Valley, the Santa Barbara County South Coast including Jalama Beach, the Santa Barbara County Interior Mountains, and the Santa Ynez Mountains. Temperatures up to 112 degrees are possible.
A Red Flag Warning has been issued from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 25 through 3:00 p.m. Friday, August 28 for the Santa Barbara County interior Mountains and the adjacent foothills and the Cuyama Valley due to expected sundowner winds and low humidity.
