  1. 🎁🍫 Even Saint Nicholas doesn't rely solely on his Big Book—he also checks his sources.

So he wanted to “quickly” check whether his entry was still up to date...
    Result:
    – 12 tabs open
    – a discussion page longer than his staff
    – and an internal link that took him to Horse → Ozosnel → Transport routes in Spain.

    Happy Saint Nicholas! 🎁

  2. Saint Nicholas, the 4th-century Bishop of Myra, is remembered for his kindness and faith 🌿. He gave secret gifts to those in need and cared deeply for children 🙏.

His generosity inspired Christmas traditions and reminds us that giving with love brings Christ’s joy into the world ✨.

  5. @phantomofopera well, since "#SantaClaus" is modelled after the real #SaintNicholas of Myra which is an early #Christian bishop of #Greek descent from the maritime city of Patara in #Anatolia you're historically accurate AFAICS 😜

  7. Saint Nicholas hasn’t even begun his run in the Netherlands and I’m already seeing people on Facebook posting completely made up stories trying to convince each other that Black Pete is not a racist stereotype at all.

Ye gods, the stupidity. And all just so they can keep their “traditions”. 🤬

  8. Such wishes are written to #SaintNicholas by our little ones this year. Along with sweets and gifts, they ask for peace, «for their fathers to return home,» and draw the longed-for trains «Donetsk - Crimea.»

United 24 found these letters on the page of Instagram of Oleni Mukolaya — volunteers who bring a bit of holiday to children living in frontline, liberated territories, and to displaced children.

  10. Surprising all the kids in your son’s kindergarten on Saint Nicholas Day is indeed a very special moment in a dad’s life. I was relieved that Noah had no clue and didn’t recognize me, even though he was standing inches in front of me.

  12. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of Greece, the Hellenic Navy, sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, pawnbrokers, students and the Varangian Guard of the Byzantine emperors, who protected his relics in Bari.

  14. "I want a Santa movie where he’s actually Saint Nicholaos of Myra...."

Or at least a movie where St. Nick acknowledges that he is the soul of Nicholas of Myra, embodied (via the power of centuries of collective veneration of Christians) to better serve as the patron saint of children. His activity each December is more about helping children in need than just deliviering toys (although he does provide toys when that is called for).

  15. As a child growing up Catholic, we celebrated both Christmas and St. Nicholas day. On the eve of St Nicholas day (December 5th), we hung a small stocking, which the next morning was filled with treats and small things left by the Saint.

On the other hand, Christmas was Jesus’ birthday, and the day Santa Claus came with presents.

Was this just a family tradition, or was it a bigger thing? I’ve always wondered but never asked.

  17. Cultural trivia: We celebrate #SaintNicholas Day 🎅 tonight/tomorrow.

In my region of #Austria, children clean their shoes & put them outside, so St Nicolaus will come & fill them with treats. He does so only if they behaved & were good all year. St Nicolaus verifies this through his book, where all kids & their misdeeds are listed. (Not GDPR-compliant, but parents love this book & threaten children with it all year!)

If they were bad, #Krampus 👺 will come & bring them coal & a rod!

  18. Saint Nicholas Day, or #feast of Saint Nicholas is on 6th December in Western Christian countries, although not celebrated in England now, it is a #Christmas #festival celebrated in many other countries. One of the old traditions on his feast day is for children to leave their shoes out overnight in front of the fireplace, on the windowsill, or on doorstep, for #SaintNicholas to fill with treats, as well as something for him to drink and a carrot for his donkey. 19. In my German-American family, #SaintNicholas always brought #books. With the kids planning to put their shoes out once more tonight, it's making me smile to have noticed that one of the most important printers in mid-#19thCentury #Montreal had his shop on Saint Nicholas Street in what is today Old Montreal. #Histodons #Québec

  20. @clacke I originally thought #December6'th was the birthday of #SaintNicholas of #Myra, but according to Wikipedia it's actually his death date «(traditionally 15 March 270 – 6 December 343)»

From what I understand, originally you'd place your shoe and sing songs on the night of #December5'th, and find the gifts the next morning on #December6th.

As a result of increased prosperity & commercialisation, it became more common to have small gifts in the shoes in the weeks up to the 5th
