As a child growing up Catholic, we celebrated both Christmas and St. Nicholas day. On the eve of St Nicholas day (December 5th), we hung a small stocking, which the next morning was filled with treats and small things left by the Saint.

On the other hand, Christmas was Jesus’ birthday, and the day Santa Claus came with presents.

Was this just a family tradition, or was it a bigger thing? I’ve always wondered but never asked.

In my region of #Austria, children clean their shoes & put them outside, so St Nicolaus will come & fill them with treats. He does so only if they behaved & were good all year. St Nicolaus verifies this through his book, where all kids & their misdeeds are listed. (Not GDPR-compliant, but parents love this book & threaten children with it all year!)

If they were bad, #Krampus 👺 will come & bring them coal & a rod!

Saint Nicholas Day, or #feast of Saint Nicholas is on 6th December in Western Christian countries, although not celebrated in England now, it is a #Christmas #festival celebrated in many other countries. One of the old traditions on his feast day is for children to leave their shoes out overnight in front of the fireplace, on the windowsill, or on doorstep, for #SaintNicholas to fill with treats, as well as something for him to drink and a carrot for his donkey. From what I understand, originally you'd place your shoe and sing songs on the night of #December5'th, and find the gifts the next morning on #December6th.
