CW: Taking city councillors riding along route of proposed bike lane
On Wednesday we took some of our Port Phillip councillors for a ride down Inkerman St. Unsurprisingly the street obliged us by demonstrating why paint isn't protection: drivers pulling out of parallel parks without checking for oncoming bikes; trucks crossing the painted lines; buses and other vehicles passing at less than the 1m minimum distance; left hooks cutting off people on bikes...
We looked at the signalised intersections (intersections clock up the most crashes, but are unprotected in Option B); the current difficulty of crossing the road, and talked about the strategic importance of the connections to St Kilda Rd and the city, and to Caulfield and the Djerring trail.
The locals shared their experiences of the road. The kid who needed to get to school; the young mum who didn't dare ride on this road at all; and the older lady who had given up riding altogether, due to the unsafe conditions. There was also a lot of hope for the future: for more sustainable transport; for an inclusive street that supports all users.
One of the kids summed it up nicely: let's make the choice that makes the world better.

Hear hear! SimonB's comment on the Bike Spot survey at Inkerman St "No separated lanes and a high volume of traffic make this uncomfortable to navigate. It would be great to see CoPP deliver a protected lane here as promised in the transport strategy." You can ask for a protected bike lane by supporting Option A here: https://haveyoursay.portphillip.vic.gov.au/help-improve-road-safety-inkerman-street Survey closes 7 December. #cycling #melbourne #SafeInkerman #BikeSpot #BikeLane

@reshmi Yes, I think that's Phil's point here. Currently the bike lane is just painted. There was recently a proposal for installing protected bike lanes here--- protected by a concrete curb, with the parking moved inwards, and removal of a lane parking. Bizarrely the council did not support it!
There is currently another proposal for a protected bike lane over in Inkerman St in front of this council--- let's hope that they get up to speed on the research you mention and start supporting active transport
(You can support the proposal here: https://haveyoursay.portphillip.vic.gov.au/help-improve-road-safety-inkerman-street) #cycling #melbourne #SafeInkerman -

Comment from F*book: "I chose OPTION A. I go to the PCYC GYM most days at 179 Inkerman St. I cycle everywhere in St Kilda.
When cycling along Chapel St, I turn left at the traffic lights into Inkerman St and because the "painted cycle lane" does not start re-commence until further along the way I am always glad to reach the safety of the "faded painted cycle lane"
I choose OPTION A for my well being from the threat of cars v cyclist."

City of Port Phillip councillor: “You can’t ride your bike and bring home your groceries. You can’t take your kids to their dance classes, or bring parcels home, or use the bike if you’re elderly, disabled or infirm." East St Kilda mum: "please tell that councillor I do all my shopping, kinder pick ups and swimming lessons on my bike. And my friends would do it too if they weren’t so afraid of cars 🤦🏻♀️"

Do you ride with parcels, with groceries, to drop your kids off, or while being elderly, infirm or disabled? Your City of Port Phillip councillors might not know that you even exist--- they claimed none of these things were possible! Please help educate them--- send us an action photo, or tag us in on social media. #cycling #melbourne #naarm #CityOfPortPhillip #StKilda #SafeInkerman
